Recurrent thrush. Can't see anyone until next week :(

I have a history of recurrent thrush and it's just miserable. I was on a two week course of itraconazole last time and that seemed to nip it in the bud but lo and behold, two months later it's back.

I saw my GP today and she basically said she won't do anything because I should see someone more specialised as it keeps coming back. She's suggested I go to the nearest GUM clinic, who can't see me until 6th June.

OTC Cream does nothing for me so I'm currently having to apply neat tea tree oil because the burning is more bearable than the itching.

Just need to offload. I feel like the next 7 days are going to be awful :(

This sounds horrid. We're just giving this a little bump for you in the hope someone sees it and can help.

(If you are in London I know of a GUM clinic where you just turn up and wait to be seen.)

Thanks Esther, I managed to get an appointment at a clinic today and the nurse was appalled at the way my GP surgery have behaved. She told me that basically there is a new policy regarding thrush and doctors will not treat it and will advise women to buy over the counter. However these don't work for me. The nurse said drs should still see and treat women who have more complex infections but because of this new policy, many are just flat out refusing to treat anyone.

But she took swabs today hopefully to identify the strain of Candida so hopefully I'll get a better treatment that makes a lasting difference!

Helllo! I am going through the same! I’m on week three of itraconazole and have done so many other meds before this. Had bad thrush since January - caused by antibiotics. My thrush strain result came back Monday and it’s candida glabrata hence why I’m not responding! They said I had to wait FIVE WEEKS to see GUM consultant but somehow managed to get in Monday as this is ruining my life. Apparently I need nystatin pessaries and only GUM can prescribe! I will keep you updated!

Katie I am so sorry you're going through this too but selfishly relieved it's not just me! Last time when I was on itraconazole the GP was telling me I almost certainly had HIV or diabetes because EVERYONE ALWAYS responds to one week of the drug. Turns out that was a load of crap! GUM clinic told me it often takes longer than a week or two 🙄

I am waiting for my swab results to identify the strain of Candida too, hoping it will be this week!

Yep, I’ve been asked about HIV too! I’ve been with my partner since we were 15 years old (now 33!). Upset me too!! I will let you know how I get on tomorrow!

KatieJayne86 · 03/06/2019 13:44

I’ve been given nystatin pessaries for 14 nights. Hope you manage to get yours sorted too! X

hi, did the nystatin pessaries knock it on the head? I have been battling thrush for nearly two years now and have had miconazole, fluconazole and clotrimazole. I have been told from the swabbing at the sexual clinic that it is definitely albicans, not glabrata. the funny thing is, all of the treatments work for a bit, but then it just comes back. Now I have just started taking itraconozole for 6 months and so far things have not immproved, but i am only 2 capsules in. the whole thing has been so stressful! I have spent a fortune on probiotics (optibac intimate health), and over the counter treatments but it hasn't really hit the nail on the head. In desperation I have begun to open capsules of the optibac probiotics and tip the flora straight onto my vagina to 'cut out the middle man'. Optibac has loads of rave reviews but until I can treat the root cause I think they will only have a cursory effect!

@KatieJayne86 did the Nystatin help? Currently going through this.

Kylorey · 11/11/2021 14:50

I used to have recurrent thrush. Saw a consultant in the end who prescribed ONE MONTH of treatment and it never came back. So for one month I used Gyno-Daktarin (miconazole) internal cream, which is way better than pessaries. Also if you have unprotected sex get your partner to put some on for a bit too. Honestly consultant was insistent length of treatment given for recurrent thrush just isn't enough and reduces symptoms for a bit but doesn't kill all the yeast so it comes back. Hence the longer one.

Pretty sure GP can prescribe it as I went back and asked specifically.

Kylorey · 11/11/2021 14:51

I used the cream every single night for a month I should have said.

googlewack · 11/11/2021 17:23

i just came on here to post similar.

I never used to get thrush then all of a sudden this year I have had it after every time I have sex, everytime I my period comes.
Ive seen the GP 4 times now and i just get given more flucanazole and it doesnt seem to do anything but make it go for a shortwhile until it comes back again.

DH and I are scared to have sex now as it results in me being in agony until the creams/pills work.

The clotrimazole cream just seems to make things more uncomfortable but I am worried now after using it nearly constantly for more than 6 months that ive become immune to it.

What am i meant to do?!

user1499616908 · 11/11/2021 18:43

@googlewack try get a referral for a GU specialist or if you can go private. They will swab you check the strain of candida and the kind of medication it’s sensitive or resistant too.

@KatieJayne86 did the nystatin help you?
