Tracking my periods for the first time. Can anyone help?

So I'm 34 and have never tracked my periods. I don't know how long my cycles are or anything.

Dh and I have talked about trying for another baby in the future so I want to start tracking them.
So my biggest problem is I don't know what counts and day 1 of your cycle. I usually get brown discharge then red blood then brown discharge again.
Do I count day 1 from the day this brown discharge starts or do I wait to see red blood before counting? I've retired to google these answer buts it's not very clear.

Last night I wiped and there was red blood. This morning brown and now red again? What the hell is going on with my body?

I had a Mmc in March and had to have a d&c. My fist cycle after that was in April (think it started on the 13th)

I've got cramps now and red blood when I wipe but nothing on the pad. Should I count today as day 1?
Any help would be much appreciated thanks.

I would recommend using an ovulation predictor kit, like Clear Blue. This is miles more accurate than tracking.

@Justtickingboxes thank you. We're not looking to start trying until July/August (got holidays coming up) just wanted to get a sense of how long my cycles are ect first.

I get similar, I counted from red blood. Unless there was a lot of brown (as in heavy) then I'd from then. But to start with count from the first day of red blood as day 1 of your cycle for a few cycles until you get a sense of them then you can review from then.

I use a great app called Flo which tracks my cycle. It's also has great features like recording daily step count, sleep and water intake. It is free to download. Best of luck with getting on top of tracking your cycle! Once you get into a rhythm with documenting it becomes a lot easier (and less daunting!!)
