Can you tell me about your experience with the Mirena coil?

My gynae has suggested I get one fitted to help with horrible peri-menopausal periods.

I've heard that if it works for you then it's great but if it doesn't then it's a nightmare. I'm torn on what to do.

I'm on my 2nd - absolutely fantastic for me, love it. Wasn't pushed on me either - just offered as an option after I had my 3rd DC & I said I was done having children!

Frazzeled123 · 01/05/2019 23:07

Intied it for heavy periods. Couldn't leave the house for a day a month. I am in the minority's of all my friends and hated it. Felt like I was in the start of labour, had position of it checked twice (was apparently fine) then it fell out three weeks in.

Went for an ablation instead - it has been life transforming. Light periods and no pain. Having said that I'm glad I tried the mirena first - it's totally and easily reversible if you don't like it, and less hassle than going for even minor surgery. It could work well for you - don't know unless you try!!

Thanks for all your input. The thought of having something inside me causing me pain is making me feel really anxious and I just won't know if it's going to suit me until it's in. I don't want to get rid of one set of problems only to replace them with another!
My gynae is being really good about it and not pushing me. He explained how it worked, said it was my decision and that in his experience most women do bleed for around 9 months having it fitted.

It was horrendous. My body simply tried to expel it. Nausea, dizziness, cramping that felt like labour. I lasted about an hour, got a taxi back to the GP and demanded that they squeeze in an emergency appointment right now and get the thing out of me. To their credit, they did (they could see there was no arguing with me...).

Thanks for posting this OP. I'm in a quandary over trying this too and these responses have been really helpful.

GodDammitAmy · 04/05/2019 23:38

@howaboutthisone What are your thought on having one fitted?

I love mine. No periods since having it put in, absolutely life changing for me in a good way. Nothing negative to say about it at all.

englishdictionary · 04/05/2019 23:53

It was a life changer for me. Went from bleeding for months to not bleeding at all.

As for the consultant being sponsored by Mirena, that’s crap. Yes Mirena want to punch their brand, but they don’t sponsor doctors. They give away freebies, the on and notepad etc, lots of companies do this throughout various industries it’s not anything to be concerned about when making medical choices.

Howaboutthisone · 05/05/2019 09:03

@GodDammitAmy I've been really nervous at the idea of having it, also of having it and not getting on with it and then having a battle to have it removed.
After speaking to private consultant on Friday and getting some feedback on here-this three and one I posted about my different options (as I'm having lots of issues with periods at the moment and awaiting investigation of what to do about fibroids found) I'm thinking seriously about giving it a go whereas I'd dismissed it totally before.
There's a family planning walk in clinic in the local hospital and I'm thinking about going this week and taking the plunge. I'm awaiting my appointment and think it would also help if I can say that I have tried this before I get to the appointment. Either it will be brilliant and really help (though I still think they'd need to look at removing the fibroids and polyps) Or I'll be able to say I've tried it and it wasn't for me. At least I'll know either way I suppose. That's the way I'm leaning today but I am very nervous/worried about it so don't know if I'll change my mind again🙈

Howaboutthisone · 05/05/2019 09:03

How are you feeling about it now?

JaneEyre07 · 05/05/2019 09:13

At 30, I had treatment for cervical cancer, and during the scans I had, the Doctors told me that I had scar tissue wrapped around my uterus and bowels from 2 c sections. Which explained why I had horrid painful flooding periods, the worst of which was when I stood up in my dads house and gushed all over his antique rug in the living room.... he wanted to call an ambulance and was dreadfully upset that this could be normal.

So the Gynae consultant recommended a Mirena to me - it was a new thing that they were trialling and had good reports about reducing periods. I was so desperate I'd have tried anything. This was nearly 20 years ago now, and I've had them replaced every 5 years and not had any issues at all. Periods stopped within 3 months, and I stopped being housebound for 3 days a month. Had no side effects whatsoever, and can honestly say that for me it was life changing.

However our local services have now changed and instead of having it replaced at our local sexual health clinic (they now only treat under 25s) I had to have my latest one done at my GPs surgery. She bent one coil so I had to go back, and ever since insertion, I've had the worst imaginable pains with it that I've never had with others. Like a sharp stabbing pain that literally takes your breath away. I've got a horrid feeling this one has embedded deeply into my lining or even gone through and I'm putting off going to have it looked at.........

So honestly, they can be a huge benefit but only when correctly fitted. And sadly our GP doesn't do enough of them to quantify much of a level of expertise. If you get one fitted, insist on going somewhere where the staff are really experienced with it.

GodDammitAmy · 05/05/2019 10:31

@Howaboutthisone I'm the same as you now! Was totally against the idea to start off with but after a horrendous period this month where I was literally dripping on the kitchen floor despite having a night time pad on I have to give it a try. It works for a lot of people, let's just keep our fingers crossed we're in that category.

Fingers crossed that you get on with it- it would be amazing for you 🙂

Redgirl7 · 02/07/2019 00:05

Had mirena coil fitted as heavy and painful periods. Was put to sleep for procedure so no pain or memory. Have no period pains and bleeding is 90% lighter.

sweetkitty · 02/07/2019 00:21

I’ve never fancied it myself, I’m on the mini pill and DH has had a vasectomy.

In my close circle of friends it’s 50/50 some love it some hate it. Friend A recently had to have an op as it couldn’t be removed. Friend B well hers is a horror story she had one fitted 6 weeks after DC1, she fell pregnant, they couldn’t remove it, she had so much anxiety about being pregnant with a coil and the garb it might do. Anyway baby born all ok still didn’t come out with the baby or placenta she had to have an op.

Sunshine1239 · 02/07/2019 20:21

I had it and had it out 2 weeks later - I was in agony and even then I had to be scanned and go to hospital as they couldn’t reach the threads

I shouldn’t have had it in first place as it’s really bad for people with thinning hair- as are any progesterone only contraceptives

I didn’t know this til afterwards so had it removed and went back to cilwst which has positive affect on thinning hair

SwearyWhitehouse · 02/07/2019 20:34

Mixed experience here.

First one stopped my periods straight away, thought that was fab. It did, however, hide the fact that I stopped menstruating due to a developing eating disorder which meant I didn’t get effective treatment as soon as I might have otherwise. I strongly suspect it contributed to my MH issues too.

Second one wasn’t great as by then I’d grown a few fibroids and it poked at one of them. I spotted constantly on it and it took me a year of repeated visits (after 6 months of daily bleeding) to get the clinic to remove it for me.

I’ve had a hysterectomy now but all the Gynaes I saw for my fibroids were desperate for me to have another one, in spite of me saying I was done with artificial hormones due to MH and eating disorder issues. I think it’s seen as wonderful for everyone and whilst it can be for some it’s not universally great.

My sister and friend loved theirs though.

rosesandcashmere · 02/07/2019 21:02

Mine was fine. Didn't stop my periods at all but I didn't get pregnant. Had some issues getting it out. I haven't had children.
