Hysterectomy advice

I have just been given a date for my hysterectomy (hopefully laparoscopic). I am late 30s, have four dc and no desire for any more! Have always had extremely heavy periods with clotting and flooding. Over the years I have tried various meds and had unsuccessful ablation. No other abnormalities have been found.

I am sick and tired of always having to work life around my cycle and the bleeding frequently leaves me extremely anaemic, tired and dizzy. Basically I would have to take iron full time to combat this. So, this is how we have come to the hysterectomy.

However - now I have a date I am absolutely bricking it...and doubting if I am doing the right thing! Is this a normal reaction? I'm worried about the recovery as well as any potential side effects/risks. Just normal collywobbles?
Also, a very specific question - would it be reasonable to expect to be able to go on a train travel trip which involves carrying a heavy back pack approx 6 weeks after he op!? Or am I being delusional!?

Any words of wisdom would be very much appreciated.

Sounds pretty normal to me! I don’t know whether you’ve seen this thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_health/3332246-Hysterectomy?pg=1&order= but it might help you to read other people’s experiences with the op and recovery.

I think it's totally normal to be frightened & questioning if it's really needed for any major surgery. But it really does sound like the right thing for you, you will be able to live fully & be happy. I think the train journey at 6 weeks post op is over enthusiastic though. Good luck

Thank you both. I will check out the other thread too.

I guess it's questioning myself as to whether this step is too drastic!
