Spotting after sex

Hi All

Had a mirena coil fitted in late 2017. Any side effects settled down quickly, periods all but disappeared quickly, just very light for a couple of days per month. Cut to January this year and periods started getting heavier again. Then in the last 2 months or so, have started to get regular spotting all through the month, worst the day after having sex.

Went to GP this week who has taken swabs to check there isn't any STIs (highly unlikely) or infection, and checked coil is in place. She said all looked healthy (assumed she meant cervix also?) and my smears are up to date.

I asked what would the next steps be if swabs come back fine and she suggested that I start taking pill as well as having Mirena to try and sort it out. I said I was reluctant to take anything else with hormones, would rather take coil out.

I am just really concerned that they are missing something. I have always had regular periods pre-coil, never had anything like this before. I also have mild pain in my reproductive area of my torso which has just started recently.

I was told years ago that I have PCOS but this never affected periods and I have a daughter so no fertility issues.

Just wondered if anyone else has experience similar or has thoughts? Sorry for the huge post!

Was the mirena fitted initially because of heavy periods?. Something is causing that, the pain you are now experiencing and the spotting and it should be further investigated?.

Has the GP not referred you to a gynae?. You really ought to be seeing such a person now as such problems are often outside a GPs general remit.

No was just fitted as a means of contraception.

If the swabs come back fine this coming week I will be pushing to be referred as it can't be normal. The GP just seemed to playing it down as if it's hormonal but I worry something is being missed :-(

I suffer from some health anxiety and the worry is making me ill.
