Hi just wanted to know if anyone had high risk hpv and was okay years later? Also im reading mix things on internet. Does hpv remain dormant or does it clear from the body? I had a cervical ectropion too and is that linked to hpv?? Anybody help

Hi I haven't had my results from my first smear yet so I can't really answer your question, but I have ecropian and I am also reading mixed comments about it being linked to HPV on the Jo'strust website on people's personal posts ,

Emzy12 · 26/03/2019 00:52

Hi yes. Some people said they had ectropion and got cervical cancer 15 years later on jos website. However i know a few people who had ectropion and never got cancer 38 years later. My gp just said its coincidence they had ectropion as its to do with your hormones. What causes cervical cancer is hpv and only when it persists. But ectropion has nothing to do with it.

Ectropian is so common that there are bound to be women who had abnormal cells who also had ectropian. The two are not linked. The comments on Jo's trust are from forum users, not medical professionals.

Yes true all medical professionals and nhs websites say they arent linked xx

I was diagnosed with HPV111 (?) at 24 years old (the first smear test after my oldest child was born), I'm 48 now.

I had various biopsies and removals and goodness knows what over the years, my cervix is now very badly scarred and the last time I had a smear test the nurse was really shocked by it, I ended up reassuring her it was ok and meant to look like that!

After each treatment I had had to return for a smear test every 3 months, then 6 months, annually and only in the last few years now every two years.

I've had the all clear for approx 10 years now, and haven't received any hospital treatment in that time. I'm actually due a smear test now, you have just reminded me!

So, various cone biopsies, laser treatments and loop(?) burn thingies( sorry, it's late at night!) and so far so good.

There is no link between ectropians and hpv.

Hpv comes in various strains. A few are the causes of cervical cancer. If high risk hpv is recorded you will be offered further treatment if there are also abnormal cells or another test in 6 months time if there are no abnormal cells.

Hpv is always there laying dormant in the body, however, it may flare up or it may not. If it does the body usually fights it itself and it doesn't require any treatment, in other cases it can persist and cause changes to the cells.

You have to be careful what you read. Users of a forum may link the two as they have both but they are not linked.

Watching the thread as just had smear and been told I had cervical ectopy. Nurse just said test may need to be redone. I am so scared now after googling

BelaLug0si · 01/04/2019 12:24

@howwilliknoww speak to the practice nurse and ask them to explain what an ectopy actually is, also why they thought it might need to be redone.
Google is not very helpful as there is a lot of misleading information out there.

Akrotiri1 · 01/04/2019 17:23

Assuming cervical ectropian is the same as cervical erosion, I was diagmosed with it 6 yrs ago, but have never had a negative smear.

howwilliknoww · 01/04/2019 17:38

Thank you for replying

Nurse just said in passing as "there is some cervical erosion there so you may get called back for second test but I did try and get cells" something like that. Yes it's the same as ectopian

howwilliknoww · 01/04/2019 17:38

@Akrotiri1 did you have any symptoms and were you taking the pill?

BelaLug0si · 01/04/2019 19:59

Ectropian/ectropion/ectopy/erosion are all the same thing.
It might be worth reading this about ectropian. It's a physiologically normal condition.

howwilliknoww · 01/04/2019 21:07

@BelaLug0si thanks so much for the link; really helpful and has stopped me worrying.

Akrotiri1 · 02/04/2019 10:18

Symptons were spotting/bleeding between periods x
