PMT - what actually helps?

The week before my period I get incandescent with rage at the smallest thing and my patience wears thin very easily.
I have a pretty good diet I would say: lots of fresh fruit and veg, wholegrains, lean protein. Milk in tea and coffee and in cereal and the odd bit of cheese. Low fat and sugar but drink more tea and coffee than anything else and not enough water.

I am fairly active.
My youngest is 7 months and I stopped BF a month ago.
I get a fairly good amount of sleep considering I have 2 young kids.

What works for you in reducing PMT?

Bump!
What does everyone else do that helps ease it?

no hints but hoping someone else has as I could have written your post! I think I read that calcium supplements can help but am yet to try it.... It is on the list though as something I need to do!

Try Agnus castus tincture from Vogel. It’s helped to reduce my pms symptoms (bloating, sore boobs, rage) a bit and it’s worth a shot. I still get very poor MH the week before my period so watching with interest to see what others recommend!

I tried various things - exercise, meditation, the mini pill.
The only thing that worked for me was low-dose Prozac taken 2 weeks a month.
Absolutely life changing. No more PMT.

I'd love to know too - the last 12 months have been horrendous for me. I've had blood tests to check it's not peri menopause and apparently not but I'd love any suggestions.

bluejelly · 12/03/2019 08:58

Nb there were some side effects for the first couple of months (bad stomach and broken sleep) but it was so worth persevering and I have none now.

Bomato · 12/03/2019 15:25

Thanks everyone ! Keep them coming.
Bluejelly are you in UK?

Can't remember the name but there was a BBC programme I think, about PMT and the things that worked were oily fish like sardines, and milk products. Personally I've never been worse than low-carbing during PMT and do find that I eat way way more carbs to keep on an even keel but then that causes weight gain so its not ideal.

Watching with interest as I feel the same way every month.....ranging from wanting to kill someone to wanting to lie down and cry my eyes out with feelings of hopelessness 😂. I have been taking 2 x 1300mg oh Holland& Barrett evening primrose with B6 for 2 months now and I do think they are helping a bit. But still open to other ideas!!

WildFlower2019 · 12/03/2019 16:30

So, I probably would have scoffed and ignored my own advice a few months ago.... Exercise! Honestly, I couldn't believe the difference.

I was doing 30mins on the exercise bike 3-4 times a week (on top of walking my dogs) and my pmt was nowhere near as bad as it had been in the months before.

I mean, I was flying off the handle with rage and crying at everything.

It didn't help my anxiety too much though.

WildFlower2019 · 12/03/2019 16:31

Looking at the suggestions above, the other thing I did change was eating way more oily fish 🤔🤔

CabbageHippy · 12/03/2019 16:49

same problem & worse since getting the mirena coil - considering having it removed or insisting they do some sort of hormone blood test if that's a thing ?

I take 1000mg evening primrose tablet daily but after reading this am going to try upping it to x 2

bluejelly · 12/03/2019 17:39

@Bomato yes I'm in the UK. My GP was happy to prescribe

I was going to start a thread about the same thing. My PMT has got worse since I had a colposcope and biopsy. I a man moody, snappy, irritable, very impatient and feel hopeless and tearful. I do suffer from depression and anxiety too but my mood swings have been awful lately. I was wondering if I should try some oil of evening primrose capsules. I’ve bought some magnesium ones as someone told me they are good. I’m worried it’s perimenopause already and i’m so upset as I would have liked more kids

LHMB · 12/03/2019 17:59

Meant to say colposcopy. And I am, not I a man.

Vargas · 18/03/2019 13:43

Magnesium and (high dose) fish oils throughout the month. I also take a B complex.

Plus exercise, but needs to be cardio for me, not just yoga/Pilates.

Cut out junk food and eat healthy fats every day like nuts, oily fish, avocados.
