I've always had fairly heavy periods, but this last year I've had periods were I've had to change pads at least every hour sometimes 30 minute's, and periods lasting over 2 weeks. My doctors gives me tablets to stop the bleeding which only works sometimes. I'm early 30s. Tbh I feel awful! I'm on a lot so constantly feel moody and wiped out. My doctor says its just how my cycle is now but surely this isn't normal? I'm prepared to be told to deal with it!

Not normal.

But as ever as long as it's not negatively affecting a man then you'll be dismissed.

Is there any chance you could have been pregnant just before all this started? Any other symptoms? Had a smear test recently?

A change like this SHOULD be a red flag to a decent gp, sadly there are woefully few about.

You might get further going to your local sexual health clinic to be honest. They tend to be more on the ball on gynae matters

Thank you for replying. No pregnancy and I had my smear last June with no issues. Thank you I think I'll ask to speak to a nurse there as I find they listen more

Don't be fobbed off its not acceptable to be worried and suffering like this.

I hope you get the matter resolved ASAP

poorpappa · 06/02/2019 20:51

Don't be afraid to ask for another GP, or a female one.
You must be feeling rubbish!

Chasingdandelions · 06/02/2019 21:04

Thanks! I was paranoid thinking maybe this is common as my Dr isn't bothered. I'll definitely request someone else. I feel wiped out!

I would speak to your GP for a referral for a scan. I had this when I hit 40. I had adenomyosis.

happytoday73 · 06/02/2019 21:09

I had this... superplus tampax and a towel were not enough for a 1 hour meeting... like that for a few days start of each period. I couldn't get out of bed without flooding etc. I was fobbed off too at first....tablets to reduce flow and scan to ensure no fibroids.... Also got migraines every few days. spare clothes at work for leaks etc.
Eventually saw different doctor with times of changes etc and she gave me depo injection... no period, no migraines....it works for me!

I had similar and I had fibroids, go back to your GP it's a misery living life like that

Applecrumble79 · 06/02/2019 21:41

Not normal. Go to your GP and demand a pelvic scan. Mine are terrible and I get cysts and have fibroids. Got one fibroid removed but still suffer terribly with the heaviest periods. My iron dropped aswell.

pilates · 06/02/2019 22:28

Agree, it was a misery for several years. I ended up having a hysterectomy which sorted me out. Good luck op, I sympathise with you.

Chasingdandelions · 06/02/2019 23:13

Happytoday73 actually I get migraines too, I'd never connected the two problems, but they're servere and thinking about it coincide with my period!
I'll hassle them for a referral, the tablets I've had don't work and Im finding it hard to work like this. Thank you for your kind responses

Re you not making the connection of the migraines to periods and issues there.

A few months back I downloaded a period tracker off the back of a thread on here on I think unexpectedly useful apps.

I was originally only intending to see if my cycle was the length I thought, if it was varying, and noting the link to another physical health issue.

I ended up discovering that when I was having periods the week before my anxiety (which is really bad anyway I'm housebound as a result) was going through the roof and my depression through the floor the week of my period.

As a result I got my cpns support to ask gp to let me take mini pill back to back and not have periods at all. It's really helped, not quite to point I can go out but I'm doing more in the house and my mood much more level.

Sadly here in U.K. Holistic preventive medicine isn't prioritised.

Definitely not normal: and please don’t be fobbed off if you get a clear ultrasound. Endometriosis and adenomyosis don’t show up on ultrasound. They need to refer you to a gynaecologist.

I had problems for 15 years when I finally decided I wasn’t going to accept the “it’s normal” crap - at my first appointment with a consultant he was disgusted to hear I had been left so long with the symptoms I was reporting.

Good luck, and definitely keep a symptom diary record: personally I just used a blank outlook calendar and hand wrote on it and coloured it in so the Dr could see just how badly my life was affected.
