Hi,
I've been for smear today nurse asked me if I knew I had a polyp. ( no idea). She said i need to get it checked out this week by someone with a gynae specialism. She made me an appointment for Thursday.
Should I worry?

I had one, it was removed at a local clinic then tested to check it was nothing suspicious. Mine was not suspicious and hasn't returned since.

No. Don't worry but do get it checked. I've had two in the last ten years. The first one was removed under general anaesthetic as it was growing up through my cervix & the second was removed by the GP..I felt nothing! Both were sent off for testing & both were benign.

They are very common. I've had a couple. Like a pp I had one removed under GA & the other just tweaked off by the gynaecologist, I didn't feel a thing. So try not to worry.

No, as far as I am aware cervical polyps are statistically very rarely cancerous, just more of an inconvenience (mine bled continuously for 5 mnths)

I also had the same, cervical polyp found at smear, and referred for a colposcopy ( a closer exam of the cervix by a gynae), where they will remove the polyp if possible.

I was actually found to have 3, I removed by forceps, and the other 2 cauterised. Not the most pleasant procedure, but only took about 20 mins and more uncomfortable than painful. Bit of bleeding after but stopped after 2 weeks.

The only thing I wish I had been told that the standard letters for the colposcopy are aimed at people with abnormal cervical cells or positive hpv smear tests, and therefore the procedure is more significant as could be the first step to diagnosing cancer. I was quite confused initially, especially as my smear was negative.

Again the clinic I attended was aimed at cervical cancer patients, so was a little unnerving as I was unsure if I had got confused and maybe was there for cancer screening.

They send all polyps off for testing as standard - I heard back within 3 weeks that there was nothing sinister found.

Good luck but am sure you will be fine.
