Cervical Erosion - anyone?

autumngazer · 10/01/2019 14:39

Just wondering if anyone has ever experienced cervical ectropion and gone on to have it treated?

I started experiencing spotting on about day 10 of my cycle a few months ago, as I was about to ovulate. It was bright red spotting, different from my usual period. Would last a day not get it again until the same time next month.

I went to see my GP and have cervical erosion/ectropion. The increase in hormone Estrogen around day 10 causes spotting.

I'm booked in to have it treated on the 23rd, but as I have anxiety, I'm worried.

Smear test is up to date and normal.

Thanks you.

I've had it forever. Never bothered having anything done with it. Gynae never said I should.
Now I wonder if I ought to!

autumngazer · 10/01/2019 14:45

Thanks for replying, I appreciate it. Do you spot in between periods?

I have one and it caused constant bleeding when pregnant. Which meant regular hospital trips!

autumngazer · 10/01/2019 14:47

It doesn't bother me massively to be honest. It's a small amount of spotting almost within the discharge (sorry, TMI). The doctor was quite casual about me having it treated.

Thanks Zippy. I've heard it's quite common in pregnancy and on the pill. Neither of those apply to me! It's just a bit disconcerting xx

I did when I was on the pill. But I'm 53 and post menopausal now, so that joy is gone!

autumngazer · 10/01/2019 15:03

Ahh thanks @BookMeOnTheSudExpress. It's reassuring to hear other people's experiences. I'm not on the pill, but apparently it can happen to women of 'child bearing age'. I'm 36.

I’ve had it as long as I can rememember. Always causes lots of bleeding during smear tests which makes the nurse appear concerned but I know it’s fine. It went crazy during pregnancy and they sent me for a colposcopy. All fine just annoying!

autumngazer · 10/01/2019 15:57

Thank you @Zippy1510 . That's really reassuring.

The nurse who did my smear last Jan 18 had put in my notes that I had an extremely noticeable cervical erosion. My GP was fairly casual about it. Told me not to worry but to stop the inconvenience of spotting the would just 'singe' it off. I mean she used a medical term but I forget what I was! I've had it a while. Not sure why this month I've decided I freak out about it! That's anxiety. Loves something to freak about.

I would have discharge after sex. I also felt it! It caused me discomfort. When I had a hysterectomy the doc told me it was 4+ which I imagine would be the worst stage. I had it many years.

autumngazer · 10/01/2019 16:10

What did it feel like @adayatthebeach? I didn't know it had stages. Apparently it's harmless, just annoying!

I had it for a while around 7 yrs ago - and the main symptom was spotting/bloody mucus on and off between periods.

Mine was relatively minor and disappeared on its own, although the Dr did mention it could be cauterised if the bleeding persisted.

Interestingly, and don't know if there is a link, but I have recently started bleeding between periods again, and the Dr found 3 cervical polyps.

adayatthebeach · 10/01/2019 17:23

It was like a aching.not painful just bothersome.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 10/01/2019 17:32

I had it, apparently, I had some spotting and they diagnosed erosion as the cause.

I didn't get it treated and it settled down after a while, no pain or spotting or anything any more.

autumngazer · 10/01/2019 17:47

@Akrotiri1 - yes those are my exact symptoms. I wouldn't even call it bleeding. Funnily enough I had a couple of of polyps a few years ago - there could be a link.

Thanks @AnchorDownDeepBreath - that's helpful to know. Puts my mind at rest.

@adayatthebeach thanks very much.

The spotting has stopped again today. It lets for a few hours and then that's it until the next month.

I’ve been treated twice for two different erosions/ectropians. The first time I had the cells frozen off (cryotherapy). I had been having bleeding after sex. This cleared it up completely. Then, 5 years later I started having the same symptoms. I had another erosion, in a different part of my cervix. This time the gynae smeared silver nitrate on the cells, which was a much quicker procedure and the recovery was 2 weeks. I’m still having occasional spotting but I think it’s hormonal rather than my cervix again.

Did the dr tell you what they were going to do @autumngazer?

autumngazer · 12/01/2019 20:19

Hi @CrispAddict77 - thanks for your message. Yeah she mentioned the cauterising which I assume is the nitrate. I didn't realise recovery was so long. Does it mean I'll have to take time of work? It literally only happens between the day of my last period and before/as I ovulate. I think it's the increase in Estrogen from the research I've done. At first it thought it was ovulation bleed, but when she mentioned cervical erosion it made more sense.

@autumngazer

When I said 2 weeks, that was how long we had to wait before we could have sex. All that happens is for about 3-5 days you sprinkle silver when you wipe Blush. No pain just a bit of bleeding. No time off work is needed at all. However, when I had cryotherapy, I had cramps for a few days and I had to wear tenalady for nearly two weeks as you literally leak the water, like you’re defrosting Grin.

You’ll be fine, and it’ll be worth it.

autumngazer · 12/01/2019 20:41

Thanks @CrispAddict77 - that's reassuring. I think I had the same procedure when I had a colposcopy a few years ago, the Dr found some polyps whilst he was 'down there' and yes I remember having to wear a pad, that's exactly how it felt, like I was defrosting!

I'm single no sex thing will be a doddle 🙄.

It was the spotting between periods that really worried me, I just assumed the worst, but on hindsight it can be a lot of things before the worst case scenario.
