Perimenopause

Hi. I’m 43 and in the past my periods have always been pretty regular - a cycle of around 26 or 27 days. In the last four months I’ve had two cycles of only 21 days, which I’ve never had before. And yesterday (day 16) I’ve had a pinky red discharge. I’m wondering if this could be the start of perimenopause. I don’t have any other symptoms though (like hot flushes) plus not sure if I’m too young. Has anyone else experienced this?

I'm getting similar symptoms to you. Very light period lasting for a couple of days, then pinkish discharge about two weeks after that. I'm 42 and currently have a mirena coil. I too have been wondering if this is the start of perimenopause.

Yep, 43 here too and same cycle length as you usually until October when I missed that month completely then my December one came 3 weeks after my November one finished which was 8 weeks in coming as I missed October.

Am due again now and nothing showing yet...

Did have some hot flashes in Oct but none since they've come back. Convinced I'm Peri and someone suggested evening primrose capsules for hormone regulation so have been taking those for a month now.

Lmh1975 · 10/01/2019 15:48

My discharge turned into a light period so that was two weeks after my last one. No hot flushes for me yet. Yes I’ve started taking evening primrose oil too (mainly for breast pain). I’m wondering what people with irregular periods do when they’re on a beach holiday and in a bikini?! We’re planning on going away in a couple of months and right now I have no idea if I’m likely to get my period or not!

Oh yes OP breast pain here too but eased considerably since taking EPO so perhaps that is helping. Is breast pain part of Peri then?

Lmh1975 · 10/01/2019 21:06

Yes. I saw a breast consultant today and she she said that breast pain is normally to do with hormones. Our hormones are probably all over the place at the moment! I have a friend who is experiencing the same too - really sore breasts and a change in cycles. It’s all good fun isn’t it!

Going through the same was advised b complex vitamins and OMG the change is amazing! Breast pain has settled completely ! Defo worth a try

Lmh1975 · 11/01/2019 18:19

Thanks! Which b vitamins are you taking or is it a complex?

I take the Holland and Barrett b complex. Honestly my breasts used to ache before my period and then it progressed to breast pain and ovulation pain , but since taking these things are so much better .... defo worth a try

Lmh1975 · 11/01/2019 20:14

Brilliant. I’ll give them a try. Thanks!

Is it sore breasts or sore nippes? My nipples are killing me! (Age 45)

Dollyblueeyes · 15/01/2019 20:31

44 and I'm having all these symptoms too, thought it was all in my mind, awful breast pain, mood swings, can't sleep.. I'll try anything to ease these symptoms, irregular periods etc

Lmh1975 · 16/01/2019 11:01

Eloise - it’s both! But only on one side!

Marking....

oh am glad of this thread. Am nearly 46... no other symptoms apart from period change. Over the past two years (I think) my periods have gone from 4/5 days on a 25-28 day cycle to probably nearer 1/3 days on a 22-25 day cycle. But this month I had bleeding at 19 days - so not massively under but it did freak me out a bit - was it "abnormal bleeding" that warrants a GP visit of just a cycle blip... Is this what life is going to be like for the next few years - anxiety about missed periods, anxiety about shorter cycles.... Oh I wish there was an on/off button...

Lmh1975 · 24/01/2019 22:40

Having read up on it, it seems that the early stages of perimenopause often involve shorter cycles (a friend of mine has had a period every couple of weeks recently!) but when you get further down the line your cycles become longer and you get more missed periods. It certainly is a pain not knowing when the next one is coming!!

My current period has been on and off for weeks now. So annoying. Am going to see someone about it next week.

cherylandsteve · 25/01/2019 10:12

Just come back from my gp and she is testing my hormome levels and also thyroid function as she said that can affect periods. She also said that normally perimenopause happens around 47/48

alidew · 29/01/2019 16:45

I just had a discussion with my gynae about this today - I was seeing him to follow up on prolapse surgery which I'll post about in a minute - anyway he recommended the coil to manage heavy/irregular/clotty periods for the moment and said I could look at adding the oestrogen gel in a few years' time. I'll be 46 in a couple of weeks and my periods are every 3 weeks now and v heavy. I also take a women's multivitamin that includes B vitamins and find that helps. Red clover etc did nothing for me, but cutting back on coffee has helped with night sweats.

hopeishere · 29/01/2019 18:05

Has he suggested esyma to you? It's a tablet and it stops your periods. It's use was briefly suspended but it's ok to use now.
