What’s happening with my periods?

I’ve always had reasonably regular, lightish periods. Or so I thought.
A few years ago I was diagnosed as anaemic and the dr asked if I had heavy periods. I told him no.
However the iron issue has not resolved itself and other investigations are clear.

Over the past year my periods have got closer together. I wasn’t getting on with tampons and became a bit more environmentally aware so got myself a mooncup a few months ago. I was gobsmacked at the amount of blood I produced and from that I’ve concluded that my periods are heavy. Quite heavy.

In October I had a period, fairly heavy. I was then 20 days late for the next one. To say it was heavy was an understatement - I went to a party and had to come home early because I made the bathroom at the restaurant look like a murder scene and I managed to bleed through super plus tampons and a pad in under an hour. This went on for four days at this level of bleeding then abruptly stopped.

I arranged an iron test which had come back anaemic (as expected). I spoke to the dr and he said to have my (pre arranged) smear and then contact the surgery to speak to a female dr to talk about heavy periods. Which I will do after my smear in January.

A week after I had this heavy period I then began spotting, this turned into a very light period. It would have been about the time my period would have been due if I hadn’t been 20 days late (if that makes sense?)

I’m getting myself a bit worried that something else is happening. I do suffer from a bit of anxiety though so perhaps it’s just that and an explanation would help. I’m 44 and didn’t start periods until I was 15. My mum wouldn’t discuss anything with me about her menopause so I have no idea what family history there is.

It is possible you are peri menopausal so the hormones may be a bit haywire due to that. Best to speak to a female gp and maybe get a hormone test as well as what she suggests.
