Had it fitted yesterday. No issues with it as yet however I’m stressing like mad (have anxiety so please be gentle). The doctor didn’t tell me how to check for the strings and how often/when to do it. He mumbled something about “after a month you can check your strings” but I’m sure you would check before?? I know I should have established this before I left but I was in shock from the bloody insertion (cervix had to be dilated and I found it extremely sore). Also have spent 30 minutes being “number 1” in the queue to the clinic who couldn’t give me a straight answer either!!!! How long did you wait to check yours after insertion? Thanks in advance.

To check you just stick a finger up and waggle a bit, they feel like nylon threads. It's just in case it comes out and you don't notice. I find it impossible to believe you wouldn't notice it coming out, but there it is.

Ive had two fitted and was advised not to check strings! I always did though- after period had ended, squat and insert a finger and check that it’s still there.

Probably each month

My doctor advised me of this, and I have found that this is the case, that the coil strings can tuck themselves up at the top, so to check they are still there you have to touch the opening of your cervix, and feel a little bump, which is the strings. So don't panic if you can't find the strings hanging down.

I was advised to check after each period, as during your period the cervix opens slightly so if you were going to lose the coil (v unlikely but can happen) that is when it would happen.

Be prepared for heavier periods now! Mine were light to start with so it's no problem, but worth being prepared!

Ive never checked for mine. Its not been a problem either.

Hi, had mine fitted by a gynaecologist. And she told me not to bother checking for strings, to come back on a year for review, she did an u/s to check it was in place, love it after having a miserable time on mirena

I'm supposed to have a 6-week check to ensure it's there, with the GP or nurse, and that there's no infection. DP checked last week and confirmed it was there (TMI...)
