Bad experience with the coil.

Today I had a mirena coil fitted. I feel I was overconfident thinking it wouldn't really hurt and then was shocked when it went in. It was incredibly painful and remained so for just over two hours when we decided to take it out. In that time I was clammy, shaking, light headed and mostly in extreme pain. I have no idea why it hurt so much but the pain eased significantly once it was out but now I am awake with it still hurting roo much to sleep.

When it was in, I felt a pain along what felt like my right fallopian tubee as well as the middle and later moved to the left on amd off. Obviously thats what the pain feels like not necessarily what it is.

It shows no sign of easing further and I am so tired but can't sleep. It's also causing me to nip to the toilet a lot as I think the cramping is stimulating my bowels.

I had 20 hours of contractions after my induction and I swear thus was more painful.

They didn't seem overly concerned at the hospital apart from one nurse who was pushing for a scan. Urgent scans take a week...

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Should one concerned? I think I will go to minor illnesses if not better tomorrow but assume it's very bruised and will take time to heal.

The reaction you had was cervical shock. I had it after an investigation via the cervix.

There is prob no long term damage, it's just everything's been upset a bit.
Rest up- put your feet up, take it easy, have nice cups of tea and cake, and a hot water bottle. If the pain gets worse go to A&E in case there is an infection setting in but meanwhile take some painkillers to help.

Thank you. Both me and my cervix are shocked by it all 😂

Its still hurting now and with it being constant it is really getting to me now. It feels like there is a wound inside my womb.

What pain relief did you have? I had mine recently and it was horribly painful (like contractions really) for a couple of days but eased with cocodamol and ibuprofen. Initially I could barely walk round the corner from the clinic to pick up co-codamol when I realised no way was paracetamol going to cut it. I assume you took pain relief though.

My friend had one that was removed within minutes as she felt in a lot of pain and light headed and it had poked into her uterine wall or something. Maybe that happened to you?

ElderMillenial · 17/11/2018 10:26

I had paracetamol before hand and had planned to get ibuprofen on the way but didn't have time so planned to get it after... Bad move clearly.

I'm a little annoyed they didn't tell me that's what it was. I was panicking about perforation with how much it hurt. I was in the waiting room and started to shake and go more downhill. A nurse was kind enough to let me in to her room while she did e learning. I wanted to sit up because the pain was unbearable when I lay down but she said I needed to he head down for blood pressure and I couldn't have it both ways. She shouted at me when I sat up.

Google is actually clearing a lot of things up. I think I will go get some co codemol.

I'm significantly better now but still having cramps and pain. Do you think there is a chance of real damage being done internally? My concern is mainly from reading about women that have perforated uteruses without even knowing. Aside from the shock, the pain when in was horrific. It is better to be safe isn't it?

I'd definitely ask for it to be checked, especially if you're still having cramps.

I had a bad experience with the copper coil which ended with me getting it removed while on holiday (in a non English speaking Catholic maternity hospital Grin) and once it was out the pain stopped almost immediately. They gave me antibiotics too. I'd ring GP or possibly your nearest contraception/sexual health clinic, mine are really good.
Glad you're feeling a bit better though.

thighofrelief · 20/11/2018 00:10

I've had 2 coils fitted. The copper one, it hurt a lot and took several days to settle down AND i got pregnant with it. Then the mirena - didn't feel it being inserted and no problems ever. I think it's down to the skill of the dr.

ElderMillenial · 20/11/2018 00:15

The doctor has been doing it for years and is the favourite of the person doing the first consultation. Apparently she is the highest skilled but she most definitely wasn't gentle.

Where it is cramping now is exactly where I felt a shooting pain when it was in. It felt like my right fallopian tube. Sounds odd to say.

I think I will call the doctors tomorrow. While it was still in they talked about a scan but I assume as it was taken out that was cancelled?! I will ask that tomorrow too.

I've felt like death all weekend because of it but hopefully it's all over now

Thanks so much for coming to me.

When she took it out she didn't give any advice. she said it's coming out now and then out of nowhere said cough. Took me ages to work out what she meant in my state and I couldn't do a big one. she pulled and it was fine. I could feel my cervix being rammed open on the way in and out.

OP when i had my 2nd one fitted it was perfect honestly so different to having the first one fitted. Have you had children vaginally?

ElderMillenial · 20/11/2018 19:39

I'm surprised you were brave enough to go back. Did you have children before the first or after? Do you put it purely down to skill? Like I say this doctor is apparently the most skilled.

I had one daughter 7 years ago. It was a c section but as an emergency after 20 hours of labour after induction. I got to a massive 4cm dilated.

I had had 2 children vaginally before both coils. I really do put it down to dr skill, the first dr was the local star coil fitter. It was so painful and felt like labour after with cramping in my legs etc. And it must have expelled because i got pg so must have been incorrectly inserted. The second honestly was a bit ick for 10 seconds, not painful at all.

HopeAndJoy16 · 21/11/2018 00:01

I've only had one, and the insertion was horrendous. Like pp upthread, I had "cervical shock". Really, really bad cramping which made me need to empty my bowels, i was shaking and light headed. I had to beg to be allowed to go to the toilet. I was sore and crampy for the rest of the day too (and on and off for the next few days iirc), and had to get my friend to collect me from the health centre as I couldn't drive home. I hadn't had children at the time though so I assumed it was down to that. The coil eventually did move and it was a right pain to get it removed, so probably better yours has been taken out already!
