Is itching down there due to pubic hair?

I take a shower almost everyday. Some days, when I am really tired I skip a day.
So, I don't think it is hygiene problems.
I don't wax my bikini. I have shaved down there maybe 3 times.
So, is it because of pubic hair- the itching?
Should I be worried? Should I see my GP?

I get very itchy down there when I have pubic hair, I thought that was normal? But I’m used to not having pubic hair I guess.

Mamamanatee · 13/10/2018 08:27

No its not normal.

Having pubic hair isn't itchy.

Hair growing back after waxing or shaving can be itchy.

Jozen · 13/10/2018 08:30

No your GP won't tell you not to go out for worms or scabies.
It's probably advisable that you abstain from sex or close contact with your partner until you resolve the itchiness to prevent cross contamination if you do have something.

exLtEveDallas · 13/10/2018 08:31

Are you a little overweight? Could be sweat rash, easily countered with a 1% hydrocortisone cream (available OTC).

gamerchick · 13/10/2018 08:36

Unlikely to need a GP.

Why don't you test for thrush first, you can buy the test at the supermarket and go from there.

claraschu · 13/10/2018 08:41

Pubic hair is not itchy! It is normal and natural, healthy and clean for your body.

It's itchy because presumably it's growing back! (If you have removed it already.)

It's laughable really- I have never in my life removed pubes except for the stragglers - but there is this whole generation of younger women who think it's itchy, smelly, something to be rid of.

yup, someone's really done a number on them.

Thank you for all the answers....will get it checked....
I read somewhere that if you don't get rid of pubic hair, lice could grow down there..i read this a few weeks ago...how accurate is this info?

@exLtEveDallas Nope, not overweight.

Lice don't just grow. You have to catch them.

You know, like headlice. Though I suppose bald people don't get them.

Never got rid of mine and never had lice in all my 53 years.

GreyPJs · 13/10/2018 22:12

New to MN?

dementedpixie · 13/10/2018 22:13

What nonsense are you reading? I've never got rid of my pubic hair and have never had lice

QueenoftheNights · 13/10/2018 22:18

rareflowergirl You don't have to say but if you or your partner(s) are having sex with other people, or you have had a new partner recently, there is a risk of catching pubic lice.

They are like nits and you catch them from other people's hair- they don't just land from Mars and fly around looking for some unsuspecting woman who's got pubes.

You seem to have a lot of misconceptions about pubic hair. Hmm

QueenoftheNights · 13/10/2018 22:21

You're clearly young- previous posts say you are at uni.

Have a little read.

Thanks @ QueenoftheNights : I don't have pubic lice then...

Oh dear me.

I get very itchy down there when I have pubic hair, I thought that was normal? But I’m used to not having pubic hair I guess

No it is not normal.

I'm not sure there are sufficiently hyperbolic words to describe how inaccurate that is.

You either have some sort of skin infection or an STD. What you are describing is not normal. You need to see your GP about that and the missed periods.

More worrying is the fact you are only 30 and have not had a period in 4 months. If you are sexually active you need a pregnancy test now and while you are buying it ask to speak to the pharmacist about the other issues. They might be able to offer non- prescription treatment whilst you wait for a gp appointment.

QueenoftheNights · 14/10/2018 08:06

as PP said

  1. see your GP as missing 4 periods at age 30 is not normal. (Are you anorexic or very underweight?) If you have any other odd symptoms you could be suffering from a premature menopause (worst case) and this needs hormonal treatment.
  1. Shower daily but use only something like plain, simple soap, not scented soap or gels. Do not wash your vulva or pubic hair with soap- just warm water.
  1. Swap your laundry powder/ liquid to something for sensitive skin (not a bio product) and give your undies a 2nd rinse.

4 If you normally shave your pubic hair, or wax it or whatever STOP and let it grow back. You could have infected hair follicles but they would appear a bit red. It may itch while it grows back but it's a vicious circle- if you keep shaving, it will keep itching the minute it starts to grow. Once it's fully grown there ought to be no itch.

5 If you have had sex with anyone new or exposed yourself to a possible STI in the last few months, get tested.

Maybe worth to try this new pantyliner, Afresh, it stopped my itchy problem at least. Be aware of the tingling sensation at first. It took me a couple of hours to get used to it. Apart from that, they are far better than always.

They offer free samples: www.afreshpads.com/product/afresh-sample-packs/, but you have to pay 30 pence for postage. Hope it helps.
