Am so itchy!

I suspect this is something to do with the onset of menopause as I’m nearly 50. My skin is so itchy. It started in the intimate areas but is now effecting my armpits and inner elbows and back of knees as well. It’s driving me nuts! I’ve found that antihistamine helps but not sure if I can take that long term? Have a GP appointment on Friday but it would be good to hear if anyone has experienced something similar.

I'm having the same trouble! Legs, neck, stomach, wrists, and down there. I've an appointment next week as this is a nightmare

Glad it’s not just me! It’s horrid isn’t it. I’ve found that hydrocortisone cream helps too but that’s quite strong and I wouldn’t want to use it long term.

OTC hydrocortisone isn’t strong. Is there an actual rash? Could it be eczema?

Pud2 · 07/10/2018 21:02

There is a rash in my arm pits - kind of red patches. Not dry or flakey though. Other bits are a bit bumpy and red from the scratching. I’ve heard a drop in oestrogen can cause it.

Yes had that at begining of menopause. Absolute pain. I even got hives. But it passed so dont panic. I didnt do anything really but it just went away. One of the many wierd things that popped up but then disappeared.

I had similar last winter, it was low level of iron. It was absolute agony!

junebirthdaygirl · 07/10/2018 21:44

Come to think of it my iron was low at that time too. I began taking supplements and didn't associate that with an improvement in the dam itching.

Wondered how you got on at the doc Luvly12? I’ve been given a steroid cream and sent for blood tests. Cream will hopefully settle the itching and blood tests may give answers!

I had terrible itchy underarms when I first reached the menopause. I must have been scratching them in my sleep because they were red raw for about 2 years. I also couldn't wear any kind of anti-perspirant or deodorant because they were so sore. I remember having to use baking powder (or similar) under my arms to try to keep me dry during the day.

However, it did eventually pass, but every so often I will get an attack of the itches in other parts of my body that I never got when I was younger. Right now, it's the back of my neck. Oh the joys of being a woman.
