Bleeding on HRT

princesstiasmum · 03/10/2018 09:45

Has anyone any experience of blleding while on HRT ,
My daughter has been on Tibolone for about 9 month ,but she has had a bleed like a period
Apparently it can happen early on in the treatment, according to the instructions in the pack, but she is worried now,it started as just a streak yesterday but now more
She has made an appointment withn the Dr,for this afternoo, but wonderedv if this is normal

Yes I have. I was also told it was quite normal as your body adjusts to the hormones, and sometimes people have to be changed between the difffernt doses and types. Mostly it does just settle.

But just a word of warning from my personal experience. If it is very heavy, persistent even after changing brands and doses, make sure she ensures her GP does NOT assume it’s just HRT, and gets it checked out with scans etc. Mine missed a different problem thinking it was HRT
and it wasn’t. But don’t worry. I’m unusual. It’s almost certainly the HRt!

Hi, I was placed on HRT 3 years ago. The first 2years I would get spotting followed by a light monthly period which could last several weeks 😐. This has ceased somewhat & I now only get light spotting here & there. I understand from my Gynaecologist that it is normal to bleed on HRT. Being on this has made me feel better in so many ways, I wouldn’t want to come off it

Thank you for replies, her Dr said Tibilone should not produce bleeds at all as its the safest of all HRTs, but i have googled side effects of Tibolone and it says it is nothing to worry about unless it carries on, also that in ealy menopause some Oestrogen can still be in the body
However she has already been rung by the hospital to go as urgent on Wednesday the 10th , so at least her GP is taking it seriously and not fobbing her off
She was on a combined patch before this so could be still some overlapping oestrogen,
I will update after wednesday, she is only in the 2nd year of last period
Ihope sh gets some answers quickly

I was on Tibilone for a long tim,e,and was put back on it last year,i have never had a problem,
Apparently you are more at risk if you have had no children, as she hasnt

How old is your daughter?

Is she has POI ( premature menopause) it's possible it's her own hormones overriding the Tibolone.

Bleeding in the first 6 months with any type of no-bleed HRT is to be expected, as you say.
I'm not sure what you mean by 'more at risk if you have not had children'.

At risk of what?

Certainly not a thickened lining- which is uncontrolled growth of the lining of the womb which causes bleeding.

Its far more likely to be a hormonal blip. Had her periods stopped altogether? How long ago? Why was she given Tibolone out of interest rather than one of the many other types of HRT or indeed the Pill which is now used to younger women who have early menopause.

Tibolone is not your 'standard' HRT- it's a steroid compound that is like estogen but is not actually estrogen.

Queenof the nights my daughter is 54, she has been on 2 different types of HRT befoire, [patches] sorry cant remeber why she came off them, her periods stopped about 2 years ago
By more at risk, with not having children, means more at risk of certain cancers ,
I think she asked for Tibolne because she knew i had no problems with it, and was told it might help with her diminished sex drive, which it has
Tibolone is suitable for anyone when no periods i think so should be ok
I will try to find out which patches she was on previously, but they wouldnt stick, and when she went back and saw her own Dr[she had seen a new one before that] he said they were the wrong ones for her anyway, not sure why, wrong strength i think

Sorry meant to say she is going for a scan on wednesday,i am assuming its an internal one, but they have not said

Ah I was confused! When you said this 'it carries on, also that in early menopause some Oestrogen can still be in the body

By 'early menopause' I thought you meant she was having an early menopause , not 'early IN menopause'!

Women who have never had children are at a slightly higher risk of breast cancer. (but so are women who gave birth after 30, and lots of other factors .)

She is not at a higher risk of endometrial cancer as far as I know (and that is what the scan is looking for.)

Yes, Tibolone is often given to women who have low libido as it's got a testosterone element to it.

I'm sure all will be ok.

Queen thank you, sorry if i didnt make myself clear,
I hope she is ok of course, and because Tibolone suited me she thought bit would suit her,

From all the info on Tibolone and bleeding it sounds as if its not unusual, but her Dr is just being cautious, which is good,he is my Dr too, and he is very good

Well, my daughter has had her scan, she was told everything looked fine, but would possibly still have to have an internal one, but this morning she has been phoned by the surgery to make an appointment to see her GP, which is very quick, she was told the scan results were back,[from yesterday] and were satisfactory, but needed to see the Dr
She is obviously very worried now
I have tried to reasure her, as i also got a very quick hospital appointment within 2 days of seeing my Dr, which really panicked me, but it was just a precaution in case of something more serious. [not the same problem] and all was ok
At least the hospital and Dr are being thorough, so thats something to be thankful for

It's more usual to have a TVS (transvaginal scan) for this kind of thing as it reveals a lot more than 'over the tummy'. Bit surprised she didn't have it.(I've had many for various reasons.) The bonus is you don't need a full bladder!

I doubt there is a problem or she'd have been referred to a consultant by the hospital rather than her GP.

If she was told all was ok, assume that was by the person who did the scan at the time? Thing is, this can vary from a technician to a consultant radiologist and some people who do scans are not able to interpret them- they pass them on to a dr.

princesstiasmum · 11/10/2018 21:13

I think this is the scan the radiologist was telling her she would probably need to have, the TV scan
I had one when i had a little bleeding, it was fine,
Some radiologists wont tell you anything, but she did say there was a little thickness i believe,of the womb lining but not too bad
I cant see that the HRT alone will have caused that as she hasnt been on it very long
My daughter did say the area of her ovaries felt tender when pressed, as they were scanned too
I cant understand either why she was sent for a normal scan
I am wondering if she will just be told to stop the livial, as Dr said she might have to when she first saw him
