Ovarian Cysts - Bupa or NHS in SE9 area?

Hi, after an scan I have been diagnosed with ovarian cysts on both ovaries (I have intense pain in right ovary during period which becomes slightly painful for about a week after then almost nothing).

My GP has referred me to a gynaecologist and as I have some cover with BUPA at work I wondered if they would be best or would it be best to go with the NHS. My cover is up to £1000. No idea if that's enough for any procedure I might have to have (he mentioned an operation which might cause fertility problems).

Has anyone had any experience in both the NHS and BUPA in the SE9 area? My worry is I go with BUPA and then it ends up being very expensive and I have to pay more.

Thank you.

The £1K with BUPA is most likely your out patient limit, not the limit for surgery- check it out.

Out patient covers appts with a consultant and tests- a private ultrasound scan at a good London hospital will be around £350.
An appt with a consultant is around £250. Surgery can be anything- ovary removal could be around £3k (guessing based on what I've paid for other procedures.)

You can often see a consultant privately then be referred by them to their NHS list if you need surgery, but your insurance ought to cover that anyway.

Obviously living in London the world is your oyster re. private hospitals. You need to check which band your insurance covers for admissions and surgery. For example, some hospitals are Band A and your cover may be only for Bands B, C, D etc.

I think it's a no brainer if you have cover to use private care- much quicker, more time with the dr, and most important, you can choose who you see rather than your GP deciding- so you'd look for someone with expertise in ovarian cysts.
