Hysterectomy.

Hurrah and Hallelujah. My uterus has been given an eviction notice!

30 years of being a complete bitch. Let me down twice (miscarriage and ectopic). Did what it should do twice (2 grown up DDs). Never officially diagnosed with anything but suggestions have been PCOS and endometriosis. 30 solid years of hideous periods. 30 years of being fobbed off by assorted GPs who told me it was normal to faint, vomit, incapacitate and take over my life for one out of every three or four weeks.
It’s got to the point where my cycles are just 18-20 days long, I bleed huge amounts for 5 days (emptying cup every 2 hours), overflowing, clots. Light bleeding on and off for a further 4 days. Bleeding on and off randomly mid-cycle. Puking and dizzy. Period diarrhoea, excruciating, labour style pain. Another 3 days of pain while i ovulate plus bleeding then too.
Tried everything. Mirena - I bled for 8 months then it fell out. Painfully. Pill - unhinged. Drugs - I’m allergic to the good ones and the others don’t work so well. Herbs, flowers, tea, homeopathy, diet - all bollox.

Finally saw a Dr who actually listened and agreed to whip the bugger out. Not sure how yet as apparently it's ‘bulky’ (like the rest of me) so need a scan to see how big it is. Also waiting on smear results and endometrial biopsy (which hurt like a bastard and is still hurting 4 days later).

Oh god. A year would mean 17 more bastard periods. Please not.

I have a very good gp who has told me it takes six months to fully heal. I was expecting to be off eight but they snipped my bladder and I had a catheter on for two weeks so that has delayed things. I thought I’d go back once the three months is up but I’ve not had the all clear yet from the surgeon. I’m a nurse so get good enough pay for six months. I’m on my feet for 12 hours and my gp said not to rush. I can’t wait to start Pilates and yoga again. I want hrt but no on seems keen to give it anymore.

Whatsthisbear · 22/08/2018 09:11

Each why abdo hysterectomy? I thought they had stopped doing abdo. Glad you are feeling ok but shame the added complication of them snipping your bladder.
Bean off sick but well enough would be perfect over Christmas.....yes I’m counting down how many more I will have to get through and how much money I would save not buying sanpro!

EachandEveryone · 22/08/2018 12:21

You know I thought being off sick would be quite enjoyable but I’ve dont nothing I think I’m ok one day and the next I’m wiped out.

Sorry you’re suffering Flowers I’m watching with interest as am 2 weeks post fibroid embolisation to shrink fibroid which I’m trying first as due to size and location my only option surgically was hysterectomy with vertical incision . Hoping embolisation will work and if not shrink the fucker enough to give more options.

Whatsthisbear · 22/08/2018 15:56

Francis The size of a watermelon Shock

Post hope the embolisation works. Flowers

Clearly I should consider myself lucky-despite the horrendous problems mine cause-they are seemingly small ones & esmya shrank them.
I think the registrar I saw was awful, my gynae was running more than an hour behind so I got put in with him. Told me they don’t do abdominal hysterectomy anymore, I will be fully recovered within two weeks, I should have total hysterectomy rather than just womb removed or I would continue to have problems.....there won’t be any further appointments now either to be able to discuss anything so I’m appreciating hearing everyone else’s experiences. It’s a big help so thanks all for sharing.

.

Mine weight five kgs he had no choice but to go vertical which is a shame as he’s have given me a small tummy tuck as well. I kid you not.

LittleCandle · 22/08/2018 16:23

I had a vaginal hysterectomy 20 years ago when I was 33. I had massive flooding, short cycle, a period less than 4 days after a D&C, drugs worked for one cycle then stopped. I have my ovaries, but everything else went. It was the best thing that ever happened. I had my life back within about 6 weeks. I only recently hit the menopause and I haven't gone grey, although I think it might be starting. I'm very fair, so difficult to tell.

Beanfield · 22/08/2018 17:51

A watermelon Shock

I have lost my mooncup. How? Where could it be??????

I’ve had to buy damn fanny pads and sweet lord it’s like something from a horror movie. I’m literally having to line my entire (big) pants to contain it. Bubbling up like a bloody geyser. It’s extraordinary.

Still not heard anything at all. Considering tracking down someone who might know average waiting times. If only to give work the heads up.

Never bored with uterus talk.

I’m happy for my cervix to go but not sure about my ovaries. Dr said to keep them to avoid the crashing surgical menopause but my right one hurts and my left one doesn’t work.

I have yet another period brewing. I cannot bloody wait for it to be done.

Bean I hope you hear soon!

Mrsr8 I had initially wanted to keep ovaries & cervix but someone posted further up that their gynae had said something along the lines of why leave something in that could cause problems later? So I think that's helped me to decide.

I had to phone in sick last week for one really awful day. my poor boss asked if I was better on my return without asking outright what the reason to be off was. He look mortified when I told him I would be better when I get my hysterectomy Grin

Beanfield · 13/09/2018 19:29

Poor boss.
I’m a midwife so used to over sharing women things with my colleagues Grin

Bear I felt a little bad but he would have been more horrified if I had given him the actual details of me being off. I'm surgery based HCP & his wife is a GP so at least he is used to hearing about these things. Wink Are you community or hospital based? If hospital could you not grab someone from gynae when they are around the wards & ask approx waiting times?

Mrsr8 I was told it would be via lap so keyhole removal. Are you very against that? Just wondering why the preference for V removal? Ahhh DS2 will be very supportive if a future DP has problems.

Understandable then Mrsr8. Yes lots of conflicting but I don't think I could go through all that then risk still having any issues so pretty much decided to get rid of the lot!

I’m 36 and five weeks post total laparoscopic hysterectomy. One ovary evicted.

I went back to work at the start of the week and am knackered but feeling better than I have in a long time. I had endo and nightmare periods - lab report also showed adenomyosis and a small fibroid. Reckon the adenomyosis has been the issue as I had the endo removed earlier this year.

I am so positive for the future - though I am struggling with some weird symptoms which I think might be hot flushes - ie my remaining ovary failing. It had been suppressed via medical menopause and think it might have given up the ghost.

I don’t want to derail the thread but does anyone have experience of this?

My ‘hot flushes’ seem to be mostly at night and followed by being freezing! Sound familiar to anyone??,

MeganChips · 14/09/2018 21:06

I’m really envious OP, I have been trying to get one with no luck so far.

I have a similar tale, shocking periods, I bleed very heavily, once every 3 weeks with huge clots. It’s so painful painkillers barely touch it and I can’t sit through a long meeting or journey anywhere without flooding. I’m in constant pain, it feels like I am being stabbed with hot knives.

I ended up anaemic this year from it. I have tried the pill, tranexamic acid and I currently have a mirena jammed into my cervix where they failed to push it past the fibroid.

I had a scan where they suggested I had Adenomyosis, I have every symptom for it too. I saw a consultant 18 months ago who told me I have some c-section scar tissue but other than that there is nothing wrong with me.

I have another appointment next month so I will really push for it. The only thing that worries me is I’m about to start a new job and would be really nervous about taking time off so soon but I think it would give me my life back.

Keep us posted!
