Constant menstrual bleeding

Hi,

I apologise for the following giant essay but I’m slightly desperate!

I’ve always had extremely heavy and painful periods and due to this was put on mefanamic and tranexamic acid at a young age.

Three years ago I was put on the temporary pill to stop bleeding whilst I was on holiday and since then my periods have become completely messed up. For six months I didn’t have a period and for the six months after that my periods were “normal” i.e light and not overly painful.

For the past two years I have bled constantly. It was incredibly light and didn’t require a pad most the time. About four months ago I became incredibly heavy again but continued to constantly bleed.

A month ago I finally went to see the doctor and was put on the mini pill, cerazette, and was told this would at least regulate my periods and at most stop them completely. Instead my periods have become even heavier and I am struggling to even leave the house due to the fact I am bleeding through a night pad in about an hour.

Logically I know the next step is to go to the doctors again but after being put on the pill and various issued with my periods and medication from when I was younger, I am reluctant.

I would really like some advice from where to go from here!

I applaud you if you got through this massive essay and thank you in advance!

Please ask GP for a ref to gynecology.

Honey2468 · 30/07/2018 23:44

The mini pill doesn’t regulate things coz you take it all the time. The combined pill would give you a regular bleed so maybe worth w try but I’m amazed you have put up with this for this long. Please go back to your gp. You can’t just go on like this, good luck

I agree with flibberty, ask to see a gynaecologist.
I had bleeding between my periods, though not anywhere near as heavy as you, whilst I had a copper coil in. GP referred me to a gynae who right it was due to the coil. I was just relieved that he didn't find anything bad! You know you have to do something, you can't go on like this. It's not normal and I'd want it investigated rather than just medication to 'treat' the heavy bleeding.

Hi, again, had blood tests and they’ve found absolutely nothing wrong with me, the doctors saying that my options are the coil and the implant as there’s no underlying problem to treat and I can’t take the combined pill due to history of blood clots in the family.
I’m really not sure what to do!

Did the GP mention referring you to gynae? I'm not sure a blood test would show up every possible cause. The gynae did an internal ultrasound scan at my appointment. Can you see a different GP for a second opinion?

beeefcake · 20/08/2018 16:22

I had this some years ago and it was a cervical erosion. Do you have any other symptoms like pain during sex?

You really need to go back to Drs and ask for an exam.

HarryPotterAgog · 20/08/2018 16:23

There’s been no mention of that and I’ve seen three different gps, my only option is to change doctors surgery and that isn’t overly viable due to not being able to drive and the distance to any other surgery.

I also have zero other symptoms, just the constant bleeding.

How old are you?

I'm 59, finally in the menopause, but for the past 5 years had horrendous flooding, with clots (sorry), which lasted for weeks. I used to have to wear 5 pads at a time and sleep on a towel over my sheets.

I saw a gynaecologist, who did womb biopsies, scans, blood tests, saw I'd got 2 small fibroids...made me have the coil(I wouldn't recommend it, I had it removed after a week).

I was prescribed all the tablets you've had - but eventually was given PROVERA pills (the contraceptive injection but in tablet form) and it helped enormously.

I’m 20 and in university so was hoping this would be sorted before I went back! I’m in no pain and now that I’ve sorted out being able to go a few hours without bleeding through anything, I’m more annoyed with the situation than anything.

I thought of endometriosis when I read about your gynaecological problems particularly when you made reference to always having both heavy and painful periods. That is often a cause of such ongoing problems.

All these people have done is try and treat the symptoms unsuccessfully as it turns out and you really do need a gynaecologist referral now. It is very much in your interests to be both persistent and find out why this is happening. Blood tests in themselves are not totally reliable indicators when it comes to this type of issue either.
