Hi everyone, hoping that some people already diagnosed with PCOS can give me some advice.

I’m thinking of going to my GP because I’m concerned I have PCOS. Although I have regular-ish periods, they are often late or long cycles every few months which makes me think something is up. My most significant symptom is hair growth, on my face/chin/neck and also stomach and upper thighs, this really bothers me and is my main reason for seeking help. I have also gained quite a bit of weight over the last 4 years, I seem to gain weight very easily.

I’m in my early 20s and my partner and I are planning to TTC in a couple of years so I want to find out if something is wrong now, so I can try to manage it by that stage.

My questions, really, are did anyone have similar symptoms and even if you didn’t, what was the process of going to your GP like? What should I expect test wise? And did you struggle to get pregnant if you were diagnosed?

Thank youSmile

I have PCOS, unfortunately my symptoms are the complete opposite. I could go 6 months without having a period and then bleed for two, I struggle to put on weight, have some facial hair but it's manageable. And get severely bloated and shooting pains in my side.

My aunts also has PCOS but her symptoms are very similar to yours.

For me I went to the GP due to bleeding for so long. Was referred and went for an series of blood test, an ultrasound and an internal examination.

It was all pretty straight forward and I was diagnosed quite quickly. However apart from giving me a printed handout on PCOS not a lot was said or done.

I am now on the copper coil and have regular 4/5 day periods

If I were you, I would just tell the GP your symptoms and ask for a referral.

Good luck

I have PCOS. Was diagnosed at 21 and I'm now 34.

Similar symptoms to you really. I went to see my GP when I was 30 and mentioned we were thinking of TTC. He told me to 'crack on with it!' as I was 30 already and that I should expect it to take me a year or two to fall pregnant. He talked me through the options if we did struggle and put me on Metformin as soon as I came off the pill (which can help you ovulate if you've got PCOS).

I was pregnant within 12 weeks. Now have a two year old. I went back on the Metformin a while ago to help with weight loss (it also helps with insulin resistance) and we decided to TTC again at the end of last year. I was pregnant two weeks later and am now 32 weeks. So far another healthy pregnancy.

I may just be very very lucky. I know some people struggle massively with PCOS and conception. I was expecting to, but I haven't at all.

Good luck!

I has pcos. Diagnosed at 16, am now 26. I went to my GP because I had excess hair on my chin, my periods were every 35-40 days (I don’t have any now since being on the implant). I think I had a blood test and a ultrasound scan, I hadn’t had sex yet at the time so they didn’t want to give me an internal.

Since being diagnosed its never been mentioned again! They said “yes its pcos” and thats about it. I didn’t struggle to concieve, it took a couple of months each time
