I am 46. My last two periods have been hellishly painful. Labour-like, and the pain just laughs at the Nurofen I've taken. I started (#3 hellish period) yesterday and was awake all night with this terrible pain. At 6 I got up and vomited - I have never known pain like this, my stomach is still queasy and the pain is bearable but walking is uncomfortable. I find it worse when I try to straighten up. Anyway they are also heavier and longer than before.
I cannot face into these being a regular event. It is completely debilitating so I will go to the doctor and ask for a gynae referral. I'm in Ireland so this is going to cost me €€€€. What should I be asking for though? Two friends of mine had endometrial ablations (I think) so that's what I'm hoping for but they were abroad so I'm not sure I will be offered anything practical. I have fibroids but previous gynae visits have been unwilling to bother with them but I would imagine they are contributing in someway to this torture.

If anyone has experience of increasingly bad periods/fibroid treatment please tell me how it went. I want to be a little prepared for the doctor visits. I'm afraid they will say: "that's your lot, the fibroids will shrink when you reach menopause, cheerio now!"

I totally understand your pain. I have the most awful heavy painful periods ever. I had a transvaginal ultrasound and discovered I have 3 fibroids. I have even ended up in A&E due to the pain.

If I was you I would t suffer in silence as there are other options.

Im due to have a hysteroscopy and fibroid morcellation on Thursday. Im scared but also cannot go on any longer with periods that are affecting my life. I have low iron and haemaglobin levels aswell.

What advice have you been given?

None yet applecrumble, i am going to the doctor but am afraid I'll be robbed off with a prescription for Ponstan and sent away. At €50 a visit to the go it's steep to traipse back again

I saw gynae yesterday and was prescribed mefanamic acid and transanamic acid to reduce pain and bloodflow due to large multiple fibroids
Obviously can't say whether it works!

So there is light at the end of the tunnel Abz00. Wish you a speedy recovery. I had mine removed last week but no incisions were made on the outside.
Hopefully this nightmare is now over!

Are you hoping to have any children? If not then get a hysterectomy - it will change your life! I had a keyhole one (don't ask me how they got everything out - it's NOT a pretty story..)
I had the cramps you get for years, after the birth of my last child I had a constant period for nearly 3 years.
The consultant tried to fob me off with drugs, coil etc etc but I refused and eventually got the op - when I did have it they found 2 melon sized fibroids, plus numerous smaller ones - total weight of the fibroids was 7lbs!!!
I feel amazing now - no exhaustion, no anaemia, no pain - and whats more no more smear tests as they took my cervix out too.

Go for it if you can!
