Mirena removal

Hi all, I'm in the process of booking an appointment to have my Mirena Coil removed and just wondered if anybody had any experiences to share of what it would be like afterwards?

One of the main reasons I'm having it removed is due to increased weight gain, I am gaining a vast amount of weight that I can't seem to shift, I've only had it in since April and have acquired 1 stone.

If you have had a Mirena and weight gain, did you lose the weight fairly quickly after having it removed?

Does the actual procedure of having it removed hurt?

Sorry for the million questions, I'm just flapping thinking I'm never going to shift this bloat.

Hi, I am thinking about the same thing. I had my coil fitted last April and I've nearly put on 8lbs. Which doesn't sound a lot but it's made me heavier now then when I was carrying my second child and she made me huge.
I'm wondering what to do after I.e. how easy will the weight loss be and how will my periods be, after a year with sporadic spotting.
I think it's a relatively easy procedure and I'll probably be back to work straight after. That's my plan anyway.

Hi! I had it removed, I can tell a difference in weight already. Almost makes me think it's more like bloat and water... strange.

I didn't even feel it being removed, I didn't start bleeding until the following day but I haven't experienced anything unpleasant. I feel much better in myself too, my mood has lifted and my skin looks better. I'm really glad it's out, even more glad I've started shedding the weight too, it was really getting me down as nothing I did would make a difference. It really didn't agree with me!

The worst thing is, when I called my GP for an appointment, they told me they don't remove them at my surgery! So I looked on NHS choices and found a sexual health walk in clinic Sat morning. Got seen and begged for them to remove and they did. They seemed reluctant, wanted me to have the consultation then return at a later date but I pushed the issue and thankfully they agreed. Literally took about 2 mins!

Thank you readyforapummelling. I have just phoned my GP secretary, to book removal. However, I need to discuss with GP first reasons why. Drives me mad, it's like they are holding my own body ransom with something I don't want. If they say no, I shall be at the clinic too! Keep me posted on how you are after the removal, it shall be interesting to see. Thanks again, it's a bit of a relief knowing someone else is in a similar situation as me and not me going mad.

@Thebeardid1t I thought I was losing the plot too then realised what it is. Just stick to your guns with the GP, they are quick to put them in but a bit reluctant to take them out when unsuitable.

Keep me posted on yours too Smile

They're reluctant to pull them out because they are expensive in the first place and meant to last 5 years.
I've had Mirena for 10 years. Not without issues.....had a fibroid removed then reinsertion. Yes, I think you can gain weight however it's nothing that can't be handled without adjusting the diet and exercise. Reduced bleeding of course is the main benefit.

Thebeardid1t · 17/07/2018 20:21

I'm sure they are reluctant to pull them out due to expense as well as their sequins targets, the NHS have to meet, payment by numbers.
I wouldn't rush to have this removed, if I didn't think it was making me worse than before. The fact I've changed my diet completely and I go to the gym between 2-4 times a week has not made a change. In the last 8 months and I'm still getting bigger and no I'm not pregnant! I have made all the appropriate changes before going to the gp, as I hate wasting GP's time. I think when you start thinking about skipping meals to stop you gaining weight, then it really is time to come out. It does work for some and I wished it did work for me, but I have to accept it hasn't.
