I am 36, and for the past 3 years my periods have totally changed. I have always been regular. Then I missed a few periods, had a few that were too long, light bleeding all the time. Then nothing. I went to my GP who gave me no explanations but referred me for hormone tests and a transvaginal scan.

tests came back "Normal levels" and scan was inconclusive, although the dr advised the problems were probably being caused by my obesity and to lose weight.

So no answers and no bleeding for a while. Lost 2 stone (still very overweight) then had a bleed that would not stop. It was like all the periods I had missed were happening at once. Went to see a private gynae who was better but still didnt really advise what or why this was happening. She said my results didnt show PCOS, and that I likely wasn't ovulating. She prescribed norethisterone to stop the bleeding and then advised mirena coil if I wasn't bothered about children.

I didnt get the coil and didn't bleed again for a long time apart from spotting here and there. I am now having another very heavy bleed. Fast forward to now - a year and a half and having come out of a horrible anxiety disorder i am ready to tackle this. I want to know what the problem is, why isn't my body producing enough progesterone? And how do i try and regulate my cycle? Does this mean I cant have children? I am going back to my GP and plan on losing the rest of the weight. But does anyone have ANY idea what might be causing this and what the best options for me are?

I might add around about the time I started to have problems I also started to get migraines with aura and this also coincided with starting a daily medication for my anxiety - propranolol.

Thyroid level came back normal.

Weirdly, I could have written this entire thing, word for word, down to migraines, anxiety and propranolol.

I've recently finished another round of tests and seen a sepcialist, who said he has no idea why I've been bleeding for over 75% of the last two years, no identifiable cause, some slight hormone issues but nothing with a 'diagnosis'.

He's given me a 3 month supply of norethisterone (3 weeks on, 1 week off). Its the first time I haven't had a period for longer than two weeks in over two years, and I'm loving it. Also trying to lose weight, but after reading your post, may consider stopping the propranolol as a trial.

How wierd is this! I did think it was an odd coincidence but there is no studies out there that point to a connection between propranolol and hormone disruption....what dosage do you take?

I am not able to stop yet as they are fantastic for my physical anxiety symptoms and have also had a great effect on my blood pressure so I am not sure I am ready to stop those.

Did your specialist mention PCOS or ovulation? Had you suffered from migraines before? I had when I was about 19 but not since.

Mine said I didn't have the correct hormone levels to have PCOS.

I have just started a new batch of heavy bleeding and I only have one sleeve of norethisterone left so I don't know if its best to let it carry on as I haven't had a proper bleed in such as long time :-(
