Hysteroscopic Polypectomy

I am having a hysteroscopic polypectomy under a local tomorrow to remove a 2cm growth thought to be a polyp. I was just wondering if anyone has an advice or words of wisdom for the procedure or afterwards?

I know no-one replied to this but I thought I would quickly reply for anyone who stumbles on this thread later.

The polyp had grown so needed sectioning to remove. It was still much easier than I thought it would be, I was nervous about having it done under a local rather than a general but it was not much worse than a smear. Slightly anxious wait now for the biopsy results but the chances are it is all fine.

Hi Oddboots, hope all goes well with the results and they don’t take too long. Glad the op is all done with!

OddBoots · 12/07/2018 19:13

Thank you very much SawyerThackery. :)

I'm having this done in a couple of weeks. I'm having a general anaesthetic. I'm frightened Shock

OddBoots · 12/07/2018 19:25

I'm sorry you are frightened cherryberrie.

Is it pain you are frightened of or something else?

I'm frightened of the whole being put to sleep thing. Never had a GA before. Also worrying about the pain afterwards.

OddBoots · 12/07/2018 19:41

I am now more than 8 hours past the procedure and no significant pain, just mild cramping but not as bad as a period.

I am guessing there is a reason you need a GA rather than having it done as a local, I had a local for this but I have had generals for other things, I know it seems scary but the chances of a problem with them are very, very slim, the doctors are so good at knowing what they are doing.

I had a hysteroscopy, D & C and polyp removed under GA. I can tell you it was very straightforward and little discomfort afterwards managed by paracetamol. Did a five mile walk three days later (probably wouldn't recommend that bit!) Hardly any after effect from anaesthetic - just remember to take some pads with you for any bleeding afterward.

cherryberrie · 12/07/2018 19:47

Thanks oddboots

I had the hysteroscopy with out anaesthetic when they discovered my polyp but I instantly started cramping and for me it was extremely painful. The consultant said that it would be much easier for me if I had a general anaesthetic for the polyp removal as it would be less stressful.

cherryberrie · 12/07/2018 19:50

Enlightened how long after the procedure until you could go home please?

EnlightenedOwl · 12/07/2018 19:51

I had mine removed with GA as consultant didn't think I'd tolerate the procedure. Afterwards explained GA definitely way to go as had trouble with access and opening cervix - he thought it would have been too painful done whilst awake.

EnlightenedOwl · 12/07/2018 19:53

In terms of going home......bit hazy I came back from theatre about 10am(was first on list). minimal stay was four hours. However I eventually left about 4.30pm only because I really slept after the anaesthetic and didn't wake up properly until about 2.45. (I did have something to eat not long after coming back after theatre but just wanted to sleep)

cherryberrie · 12/07/2018 19:56

Thanks, I was told I would be able to leave after a few hours but I wouldn't be able to drive. At least it won't involve an overnight stay.

EnlightenedOwl · 12/07/2018 20:01

hope all goes ok sure it will x

cherryberrie · 12/07/2018 20:09

Thanks, I've no choice so I will just have to put my brave head on.

OddBoots · 22/07/2018 18:48

Just updating to say I am now 10 days post and while I am still lightly bleeding on and off I am suffering no ill effects other than a bit of waiting anxiety for the biopsy results, I jump when the phone rings or the post arrives. Hopefully not too much longer.

I hope you are doing okay cherryberrie.

Just using this thread to vent a little. My letter about the procedure said I would get a letter about 2 weeks after with details of what they found and any results, it will be 3 weeks on Thursday and I have still not heard anything. I know that no news is probably good news but I still have that nagging worry at the back of my mind.

I phoned my GP at the end of last week and the receptionist said there was a report on ICE (I think that is a centralised database thing) but that she couldn't tell me what it said, the gynae team would be in contact themselves.

I don't really want to waste a GP appointment and I know everyone is really busy and working hard but if the report is there and ready I really wish I knew what it said.
