Severe tailbone pain appeared 3 months postpartum

Hi all, I don't know if it's a late symptom of childbirth, or linked to hormonal changes, or just an injury I've unknowingly (and weirdly) picked up but all day today my coccyx bone has been killing me, especially when I am sitting and when I get up or down from a seat. But worse of all it's soooo sore when I'm breastfeeding. I've googled to find out if it's normal but all I can find are women who've had tailbone pain immediately after childbirth, but not have it come on months later. I had my little girl 3 months ago, and it was a forceps assisted delivery. Has anyone else experienced this and is there any advise on what I should or can do?

Hi, I got this too but 13 months pp , did yours get better ?

Doodlekitty · 24/12/2018 16:29

Hi. I had this after my first. Doctor said I had bruised my coccyx during labour. I hate to say this, but for me the pain lasted ages, although it got less severe, I still get it if I've been sitting a long time.

Probably worth mentioning to a doctor though, I had xrays etc before they said it was just bruised

ihatethecold · 24/12/2018 16:32

Look up coccyxdenia. The spelling is incorrect, sorry.
I had it for 3 years before it disappeared.
Long car journies were grim.

Almondio · 24/12/2018 16:37

Oooh I had this for a few years after two labours, especially if I sat in a hard chair for a while, really nagging pain right in the coccyx. I had two regular deliveries, large babies but no intervention and one waterbirth. It's subsided now, I don't get it at all now, but mine are teens now.

Infection? Spot? Any other symptoms apart from pain?

endofthelinefinally · 24/12/2018 16:49

Definitely get a coccyx cushion.
Either on amazon or from a big pharmacy. It is a square of foam with a D shape cut out of one side. You sit on it so thst your coccyx is over the hole. It takes the pressure off and eases the pain.
Aside from that you should probably see an osteopath or obstetric physio.

There’s a couple of things that could have happened.
The forceps could have knocked or bruised the coccyx or it could be a symptom of pelvic floor disfunction, or poor hip stability (either caused by hypermobility or weakness or both.)
I would highly recommend getting it checked by a physio but in the meantime try a very effective hip and pelvic floor stabilising exercise.

Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet on the floor.
Have your feet hip distance apart.

Then as you breath out attempt to pull your lower belly in like you’re trying to do up the fly on some too tight hipster jeans.

Then keeping the pelvis as still as you can on the next out breath peel one heel off the floor keeping your toes on the floor like you’ve got your foot in a high heel. On the in breath put it back down.
Notice if your proves shifts or if your back does the work rather than your abs. Also try to keep your knees still.

When it becomes easy graduate to lifting the whole foot off the floor.

Let me know how you get on!

Hi all, thank you so much for your advise and recommendations.
@endofthelinefinally I bought a cushion off amazon as I was in near tears trying to sit and breastfeed (and my LO doesn't feed well lying on side). It did make a big difference!!
@Calvinsmam you were absolutely right! I ended up seeing a physio in the new year as basically on top of my tailbone hurting, almost my entire back has gradually gotten so sore! The physio got me to do just exactly what you described for the exercise. She reckons I've been using my back for all physical activity and forgotten how to engage my 'core'. My posture basically is a mess. After a few session (painful "massages") and exercises I can feel my back is a bit more open (if that makes sense?). It's still sore but it's a tiny bit better. I've bought a back harness thing off amazon that I wear in the house as often as I can and that keeps my back really straight, especially useful when bathing and putting baby to bed. It'll take time but I'm relieved that it's not getting any worse anymore!!
Thanks again to everyone for your comments Smile

Oh I’m glad it was useful and that you saw a physio and it’s getting a bit better.

I work with women postnataly and this is one of the most common things I see.
Once you have learnt how to engage your core graduate onto engaging your glutes, especially your glute med as this is the muscle that keeps your pelvis (and therefore your lower back) stable as you walk.
You can do clam shells and unilateral knee bends for that.

It’s all really boring exercises but they will make a huge difference.

Calvinsmam · 21/01/2019 13:35

Also if you still have a birth ball try and sit on it as much as you can in the house, they basically force you to sit with correct posture and you need to work your core to sit on one without falling off, the difference between this and the harness (which is also good) is that it’s retraining your abs to hold you upright rather than relying on your back.
It’s a catch 22 with posture because your abs get weak so your slouch so your abs don’t get a chance to work and get weaker.
Sitting on a ball just gently breaks the cycle.

My wife also started tail bone pain after 3 months from delivery. Very unusual one. Which exact cushion from amazon helped you? I would like to buy that.

Hi guys,
I had a vaccum delivery two months ago and my coccyx still hurts a lot.
I pushed for long and I think this made it worst.
I had back contractions and I read this is because baby is pushing coccyx...
I visited a Ptherapist a few time but not much has changed...the x rays did not show any fractures but I am desperate...
Could did last much longer??
