Would love to know your thoughts!

Will you be voting? What are your top 6?

I'm still struggling to decide!

Puffin and bumblebee among 18 creatures shortlisted to feature on banknotes

The Bank of England is asking the public which animals should appear on future banknotes.

What a good idea!

I'd say the hedgehog, the kingfisher and the butterfly. These are the ones most likely to be seen in the wild and greeted with joy. Well, there might be more common ones, but surely everyone loves a hedgehog?

Puffins are adorable and iconic, but most people will never see one. The fox, by contrast, is almost too commonplace - they practically run London now. Salmon just make me think of intensive farms and sea lice.

Where's the badger? Did it get culled 😕

Cheguevarahamster · Yesterday 07:51

Lovely choices. Kingfisher, Barn owl and dragonfly are my top picks.

Chemenger · Yesterday 07:56

No red squirrel? I would go for the pine Martin, such charismatic animals.

BobbieTables · Yesterday 07:56

Ooh how nice! I think hare or hedgehog, barn owl and dragon fly.

kinkytoes · Yesterday 07:58

@Melarus agree the badger is conspicuous by its absence! I feel, like you, the fox (much as I adore them) is everywhere but the badger is more iconically British.

You get 6 votes BTW so don't limit yourselves to only 3!

We are disappointed by lack of Pigeon, and Boaty McBoatface as options.

But seriously lovely options.

Red squirrels are in the Scottish bank note so they can't be on the English ones as they would clash. Shame.

JuneJoys · Yesterday 08:06

I just voted.

the optional questions at the end got a bit weird.

demographics of location & age I understand, but what do my chosen gender or my health issues have to do with anything??

Gribouille · Yesterday 08:12

Wot, no robin?!

Wot, no robin?!

oh yes I'd vote for it 100%.

ROBIN WUZ ROBBED!

CantMakerHerThink · Yesterday 08:36

I went fox, hedgehog, puffin, woodpecker, basking shark and dragon fly.

I thought that too!

purplewibble · Yesterday 08:49

What a shame there are no plants or fungi on the list!

OnlyReplyToIdiots · Yesterday 08:51

I'd be interested in the location split of votes... if you asked me to name British Wildlife it would be a long, long time until I got to Dolphin - but I live nowhere near the coast.

emuloc · Yesterday 08:54

Where is the Robin?

‘What is your gender?’ No opinion for putting your sex. Just twaddle.

Then sexual orientation. Then impairments, but without allowing for additional quantitative or qualitative data to be added.

Thanks, BBC and Bank of England, for showing us you’re wasting our money still on DEI claptrap. Just like the waste-of-money census question.

GOODCAT · Yesterday 08:57

I have just voted and picked the ones that bring me most joy at the thought of them.

Said on the news that red squirrel is already on Scottish bank notes so it can’t be used in England.

FizzingAda · Yesterday 09:18

I voted hare, fox, dragonfly, bumblebee, curlew and kingfisher.
didn't answer the questions, WTF?

ShadowViolet · Yesterday 09:33

I went for what I think would look best on a banknote, so animals with some ‘presence’ - hare & fox, kingfisher & curlew, salmon & dragonfly.

Bank notes in the Netherlands used to feature snipe. Odd as it may sound, those birds looked like they were designed for that purpose. Curlew have a not too dissimilar vibe.

I do question the rationale of suggesting a bird that it’s on its way to becoming functionally extinct, but I’m sure the panel considered that.

Fox, hedgehog, kingfisher, woodpecker, bumble bee and dragonfly.

surely the hedgehog is a winner? I would have voted badger above fox though.

ThaneOfGlamis · Yesterday 09:34

I went with hedgehog, barn owl and bumble bee. Because they all need to be protected and are very recognisable.

Gribouille · Yesterday 09:47

A seagull rampant over a bag of chips, a pigeon evacuating on a car, a fox eating a KFC and a wasp on a bin.

Agapornis · Yesterday 09:49

Would be nice if people started using the animal names as a nickname/slang for the denominations. It happened with the Dutch 100 guilder note, a snipe (snip).

fiver = a puffin
tenner = a frog
20 = a fox
50 = a seal

Great spotted woodpecker would look great on a note, but might get shortened to pecker...
