How about a mushroom growing kit? I'm a convert to pink oyster mushrooms after being given one a few years ago, it was great fun and they were very tasty. I think it was Urban Farm-It it was from.

Wildlife Gardening by Kate Bradbury has lots of ideas for things you can do no matter how big or small your outside space is.

Binoculars? There's one for every budget -and if you're lucky, bargains on Vinted/eBay.

Silverbirchleaf · 10/10/2025 15:56

RSPB membership

Nature magazine subscription (National Geographic?)

Nature experience , eg seal watching

Old book suggestions:
Tarka the Otter
Ring of Brightwater
All creature great and small
My family and other animals - Durrells

Bonsai tree kit

There was a lovely thread recently whereby someone asked for nature suggestions for her weekends away with her sister. You son may enjoy reading it if wants to go on trips away.

Dies he know the merlin bird app? It recognises bird song.

Fledgling is good. Memoir by a woman in a very isolated area of Africa who raises a fledgling bird.

There's a similar topic book about a woman in lockdown raising an orphaned hare. Has had lots of publicity.

DS loved a beautiful pictoral coffee-table-sized book about different fungi. There are a few around.

I agree that z mushroom growing kit is good fun. I got one for DH last year and he loved it.

Sprouting jars are fun and easy to use. Get some brocolli seeds and you can grow brocolli sprouts in under 5 days with no soil and no mess. They are lovely added to salads and stir fries and really healthy (look up sulforiphane).

Book: "The secret life of garden birds". Explains what they are up to. I think there is also one called "The secret life of birds". But obviously he's more likely to see garden birds.

SparklyBrickViper · 10/10/2025 16:26

Micro greens kits? There are lots of different types but they’re easy to grown and delicious.

Copy of The Almanac by Lia Leendrtz. It’s annual (so could start a tradition), and has phases of the moon, tides, what lies ahead for each month, a monthly folk story, seasonal foraging etc.

One of Robert Macfarlane’s books — I like The Old Ways, but he might prefer Is A River Alive? Or one of Helen Macdonald’s subsequent books, Vesper Flights?

SoManyDandelions · 10/10/2025 16:47

What about a bird box with a camera in? You can get wireless ones that connect to WiFi. My son has one (he's 15) and we love watching the birds building their nests and raising their chicks.

There’s a wonderful book called Raising Hare by Chloe Dalton about her experience when finding an orphaned leveret. It’s not the sort of book I usually read but I was absolutely hooked on the relationship that grew between them. Highly recommend.

Wow! Thanks all. Some super ideas here! Pl see feel free to add more as you think of them

I love more unusual science based books about birds - both about historically neglected fields (and, probably not coincidentally, written by women)
The Secret Perfume of Birds: Uncovering the Science of Avian Scent - Danielle J. Whittaker
The Bird Way: A New Look at How Birds Talk, Work, Play, Parent, and Think - Jennifer Ackerman

Hedjwitch · 10/10/2025 20:44

Entangled Lives by Merlin Sheldrake. Fascinating book about the intelligence of fungi. I loved it.

GOODCAT · 16/10/2025 21:42

Currently reading the Penguin Book of Penguins and really enjoying it, would recommend.

I was going to suggest this too.

There's a shop called Liznojan (a word from that book!) that also sells a lot of lesser know nature related books and they often do good suggestions on their socials. I've found some good gifts through them (they're happy to post).

My very into nature friend recommended me a book about bees that I think is not available new, but meant to be really good. I can't remember the title but will try!

Glitterbiscuits · 17/10/2025 09:23

I have bought a book called Sno ( this is the spelling but I haven’t got an umlaut for the o). It’s a history of snow and the effects of climate change. I thought I’d mention it in case anybody comes to this thread looking for similar ideas. She kind

Dave Goulson's book The Garden Jungle is a brilliant read and full of suggestions on how to attract wildlife. He has written several other books which may be of interest

Glitterbiscuits · 04/11/2025 13:02

@TonTonMacoute Good suggestion! I know he read Insect Apocalypse by the same author. I have ordered it!

Probably no good for your son but I have just bought my elderly DDad with dementia Bird Bingo. He loved his birds when he was younger.

Also, something I have always wanted as a gift is an experience with birds of prey. I have previously been given a llama walk (Peak Hill, Sidmouth) which I absolutely loved.

Glitterbiscuits · 27/11/2025 20:58

I don’t think Bird Bingo is right for him but if others come to this thread then they might find it useful. I’m happy for people to chip in. Thanks.

The Hidden Seasons is Tristan Gooley's most recent book about observing the nature in the world around you and learning how to use those signs to navigate. He also has many other books which go into more detail, things like the weather, rivers and water, stars and night sky. They're all really interesting.
