Hummingbird Hawk Moth

I've just seen my first ever hummingbird hawk moth on the lavender in my garden. I recognised it instantly as soon as I saw it and its beautiful. I managed to get quite close to it and watch it for a couple of minutes. I didn't have my phone on me to take any pics but it flitted around so quickly it would have just been a blur. Smaller than I expected but pretty big for a moth. That cheered up my day. Grin

I hate moths.. ( but love butterflies).

MissMarplesNiece · 03/07/2025 19:50

I've only ever seen one once, in Cardigan in Wales. I'd love to see one again.

These were taken in my garden a few years ago - they’re a lovely moth!

I had one next to my front door last year, was huge, petrified the life out of me when I first saw it.

GOODCAT · 04/07/2025 09:23

That is amazing, love moths!

Notexactlyasplanned · 04/07/2025 09:26

Hummingbird hawk moths are so magic: never seen one in my own garden so very jealous: they are little miracles! I reckon them and kingfishers are the closest things we have to fairies!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/07/2025 10:07

Oooh , I;m not a moth fan but they look so pretty .Much prefer butterflies

I plant nasturtiums every year to feed the Cabbage Whites . And a buddleiah which attracts loads of bees/butterflies
Those Hummingbird Moths are out in the daytime then? ( rather than evening moth-ey behaviour when they divebomb just as I shut a window for the night )

putitovertherefornow · 08/07/2025 17:35

I had a massive moth fly right by my ear like a tiny helicopter the other evening. It was getting quite dark, and I saw it whizz past out of the corner of my eye. It was big enough to be mistaken for a bat - apart from the buzzing noise!

Brody77 · 08/07/2025 17:58

I saw the first one ever in 19 years in our garden a couple of weeks ago, on our jasmine, and loads more butterflies about this year in general, think this warmer dryer weather has been good for them.

steppingcarefully · 15/07/2025 19:37

This one is from a couple of years ago. Every year they come just to this one bush in my garden. I saw the first one this year two nights ago.

@steppingcarefully Do you know the name of that shrub? I'm looking for plants to attract pollinators and that one's got a proven record.

curious79 · 16/07/2025 08:15

Moths love love honeysuckle - we’ve seen hummingbird, elephant and even a deaths head hawk moth on it (the latter a v rare visitor)

We had one visit the star jasmine in our previous garden. Night scented so I guess that is useful for moths.

We saw hummingbird hawk moths on plants in France a couple of years ago. They’re fascinating!

Shriek 😱😱😱😱😱

I know (hope) you're joking, but I am heartily sick of the noise made by teenagers losing their shit over moths, butterflies and anything else with a heartbeat coming within 30 foot of them at work and demanding that you kill whatever it is. Walking into a room of 27 screaming 15 year olds (and 3 who are clearly thinking they are surrounded by idiots) to save some innocent thing from bags and shoes being slung at it as they run round in circles and scale the tables/chairs gets rather wearing.

It’s Plumbago

TonTonMacoute · 18/08/2025 17:09

A few years ago I planted lots of white valerian, specifically to attract the hummingbird moth, but also lots of other insects. It has done well and certainly insects love it.

At last, yesterday evening we were sitting out side, and there was our first humming bird moth feeding on the valerian! DH took some pictures so I'll try and post them later.

They are such magical little creatures, it was wonderful to see.

I have had plumbago like that in my garden for years, but have never seen them on it. Love blue flowers though.
