Twilight - am I missing something?

I've just read Twilight after months of hearing about it and the other books in the series. Was quite pleased to read the last page. Am I missing something or is the first one not the best and they get better?

No, they're actually crap and I think they get worse.

Butterbur · 22/06/2010 16:32

As far as I can see you're not missing anything. I only managed the first book and decided not to waste any more of my life.

There seems to be a big Twisluts thing on here though. Can't understand it myself.

No, it's utter drivel and it does get worse. I ploughed through the first 2 and a half then gave up. Which really irritates me.

It's very Emperor's New Clothes, as well as being badly written.

(and I don't like the fact it's started a craze for teenage boys to look like 2 dimensional anorexics) (take one look at the new Doctor and ask yourselves, now just why was he picked. Couldn't be a passing resemblance to the undead by any chance???)

Bleargh.

I read all of them and quite enjoyed the sheer nonsense and bad writing involved. It was the type of thing I would have loved aged about 14, swoony crap about vampires. They're so dishy, dangerous, soulless yet deep. Something like that.

I found Bella to be deeply irritating in the books. Very feeble, clumsy, weak-kneed, needing either one of two men to take care of her as she simply couldn't be without them, doing all the housework for her dad. Made me cross.

And yet I carried on reading. Weird.

oftenpurple · 22/06/2010 16:49

Ah, thanks for that. Big sigh of relief to say that I've read it and don't need to continue. It was a bit like reading a Judy Blume book, only with blood and cold skin.

Hee hee Tidey - I also carried on reading. Read the first one, said 'Oh that was utter crap', and then proceeded to read the next three.

First one is appallingly written but at least it is very romantic. The rest were just total shit IMO

FiveGoMadInDorset · 23/06/2010 10:16

I read the first have the second but will probably stick it on Amazon as not interested.

And when it got to the pages and pages of yawnsome werewolf mythology I lost the will to live myself.....(bit like the Elvish poetry in LOTR, although at least you could kid yourself that was lit-rich-er)

Butterbur · 24/06/2010 08:40

No no no. Not like the elvish poetry in LoTR. That's fabulous, and enriches the whole book with its history and references to people long dead and places that are no more.

Personally I find it hard to imagine that someone whose flesh feels a) cold, and b) like stone could ever be a desirable bed partner. Not to mention the whole he-might-lose-control-and-kill-me thing. Sick.

JeffVadar · 24/06/2010 10:56

You've done better thatn me! I only got as far as flicking through it in the bookshop before deciding I would be wasting my time.

Vampires are just not my thing (except Mitchell in Being Human - obviously).

Pootles2010 · 24/06/2010 11:05

Oh god. Its sort of like angel delight or dairylea- you know its shit but you can't resist. To be fair to the twisluts, i think they acknowledge the writing is appalling and just like to look at pretty boys.

The only explanation i can give is it re-creates that ridiculous first crush you get at around 14 quite well. But i love twilight against my better judgement - in fact i'm half relying on the new film (eclipse) to bring on labour when i go to see it next weekend.

Pootles2010 · 24/06/2010 11:08

On the plus side they sell very well at car boot sales.

iwasyoungonce · 24/06/2010 11:16

I agree it's rubbish. I only finished it because I was reading it for a Book Club - I would have given up on it usually. Total dross.

NicknameTaken · 24/06/2010 14:29

I read it because I wanted to be part of the oh-it's-so-fun-to-mock-it brigade, but I didn't even find it interesting enough to mock. Even when I was 14, I don't think Edward would have been my time. Warm flesh, a sense of humour, and kindness - what's wrong with those?
