and is it any good?

I seriuosly NEED this kind of thread for book ideasand haven't seen one for a while so...

I'll start:

Nearly finished The Little Stranger and liking it, not in a terrified way but enjoying the psychological twists nonetheless

Have nothing AT ALL to read next however

The Rose of Sebastopol - Katherine McMahon.

Good!

My favourite all time book, though, is The Secret History by Donna Tartt - not much else comes close.

Any tips?

MrsDanversBites · 25/04/2010 19:57

I loved P&P with Zombies. S&S with seamonsters is great too and I STILL fancy Colonel Brandon, even with tentacles.

I read The Behaviour Of Moths last week: has anybody read it?

SoMuchToBits · 25/04/2010 21:23

littlerach I have a treat in store then!

GypsyMoth · 25/04/2010 21:24

Library of the dead......by Glenn Cooper??

florencerusty · 25/04/2010 22:09

Reading The Children's Book (but its slow going) and a Johnny Depp bio which is like swimming in treacle and dire I think by Denis Miekle

brimfull · 25/04/2010 22:11

Margaret Forster's new novel 'Isa and May'

quite good but not as good as her other stuff imo

hellymelly · 25/04/2010 22:15

Have read wolf hall, and the little stranger both great,am now reading "self help" short stories by Lorrie Moore,as I read her newest over Christmas (a gate at the stairs)and really enjoyed it.Last week read Hillary Mantel's "Giving up the ghost".Enjoyed that a lot.

I've just finished 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society', which was a lovely read.

Next: 'One Day' or 'Girl with the Dragon tattoo' I can decide which one to read first.

I've also heard good things about The Slap

GeorginaWorsley · 26/04/2010 18:16

janeite I have read Behaviour of Moths.
ok,but not outstanding.
I have had loads of reservations from the library recently....

Gone, Mo Hayder.....good,kept me reading.

Blood Harvest, S J Bolton, got better towards the end.

The Return of Captain John Emmett, Elizabeth Spiller(?) excellent post Great War story.

The Debutante...Kathleen Tessaro,not great,skipped loads.

Blood River,Stephen Booth....excellent Peak District location,quite engaging.

kurri I have read the Jane Dawson one,can recommend.

LyraSilvertongue · 26/04/2010 18:23

Thesecondcoming, have you read Doris Lessing's The Fifth Child? You should read that before Ben in the World because it's about Ben as a child and the second one is about Ben as an adult.

Beasknees · 26/04/2010 18:26

I'm on an Iranian classic called My Uncle Napoleon which is a farce about the writer's uncle who thinks he is some battle hero like Napoleon.

I'm reading it in English and the characters translate well as being all completely barking mad and the kind of family that said 'but i took you to the stately home'.

Can't remember who it's by but it's quite different to anything else I've read recently.

janeite · 26/04/2010 18:27

Georgina - yes, I thought it was well written and enjoyed the first half but thought it got more and more ridiculous and the final quarter was totally stupid. I just wasn't sure what she was trying to achieve and what kind of story she wanted it to be.

pollywollydoodle · 26/04/2010 18:27

i'd second The Help
also
the other hand by chris cleave about an illegal immigrant and how she came to be in this country and how she came to know an english couple
this thing of darkness by harry thompson..about the voyages of the beagle...full of stuff ididn't know that i wanted to know
the adventures of english by melvyn bragg about the development of the english language
alice in wonderland..interesting to read as an adult...over my head as a child

comewhinewithme · 26/04/2010 18:28

Not fiction, but am reading The Secret Life of France, by Lucy Wadham; it's very good, but I'm not sure how accessible or meaningful it would be to someone with no first hand experience of the subject.

basildonbond · 26/04/2010 19:02

kurrikurri I read the Quincunx years ago and loved it - it's absolutely labyrinthine and completely engrossing - however, it's the kind of book you can only read once I think

I'm currently reading The One from the Other by Philip Kerr - think Philip Marlowe transplanted into post-war Berlin and you get the idea

Portofino · 26/04/2010 19:36

Just finished The Help (a MN recommendation) which I loved. And One Day - also fab. Just started the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

helyg · 26/04/2010 19:39

specialsmasher if you enjoyed The Rose of Sebastopol try The Alchemist's Daughter by the same author, it is very good.

I have just finished Juliet, Naked by Nick Hornby and was very disappointed by it.

I have now started We Are All Made Of Glue by Marina Lewycka. I loved Two Caravans and Tractors, so I have high hopes for it.
