I enjoyed it apart from the ending, which I hated!

Thediaryofanobody · 24/04/2010 22:18

Terrible terrible ending I hated the book after that (even though it was an ok read) and never read another of hers after that.

Enjoyed the book on the whole. Sad ending.

HarlotOTara · 24/04/2010 22:20

I thought it was absolute crap, the writing was terrible and the characters cliched. Read it on holiday and left it there as I thought it was such rubbish (highly unusual for me to do such a thing). My eldest dd also read it and agreed with me.

Lindy · 24/04/2010 22:25

I think her style has really deteriorated over recent years - she just seems to be churning out books for financial reasons (well, who can blame her for that) - but I used to love her books but find them all too similar in style these days.

I read The Pact over ten years ago & thought it was very good.

lilolilmanchester · 24/04/2010 22:28

I enjoyed it when I read it, hear what the others are saying but just saw it as an easy holiday read. WOuld definitely encourage people to read the book ahead of the film

Awful.

frasersmummy · 25/04/2010 20:21

I have read quite a few of her books and I have to say I think this was the weakest

My favourite was change of heart... made me laugh and cry all at once

choosyfloosy · 25/04/2010 20:52

It was the first one of hers I'd read, I enjoyed it as a good page-turner with an interesting if not believable premise.

I read another and found they were all exactly the same. I didn't bother again.

Milliways · 25/04/2010 20:54

Thos of you who hated the end - did you prefer the totally different ending that the film had?

(Threw mw as I thought I knew what would happen.)

Greensleeves · 25/04/2010 20:56

Is the film worth watching?

OP posts:
Milliways · 25/04/2010 21:01

I had read the book (which I did enjoy, but thought the end was too far fetched) but wanted to watch the film, and was not expecting much.

Me & DD sat & needed a box of tissues. If you want a girly weepy weekend afternoon type film then this ticks those boxes.

frasersmummy · 25/04/2010 22:44

The book has a good twist at the end missing from the film

That said the film is very watchable.. so long as you have a box of tissues and some chocolate to hand... its a real girly weepy

The book is perfectly readable just not jodi's best

Read the book and watch the film and enjoy them both individually

pointydog · 25/04/2010 22:47

I've read it. It was fairly crap

SusieCarmichael · 25/04/2010 22:51

i liked it but thought that the ending was too 'handy' do you know what i mean? no one had to make a choice in the end because the decision was made for them. the whole book was about the question of what was right or wrong and about choices and in the end it was just too 'easy' i don't mean easy for the family in the book but easy ending for the auther

SusieCarmichael · 25/04/2010 22:52

author sorry

plonker · 25/04/2010 22:53

I enjoyed most of it, but hated the ending.

I read another of her books a couple of weeks (can't remember what it's called) and that had a really shite ending too ...

Snooks14 · 25/04/2010 22:53

I read the book and enjoyed it - could understand the situation from both the mother and daughter's point of view but did think the ending was very far fetched.
Watched the DVD on a hungover snowy Sunday afternoon and could not believe that they totally changed the ending but maybe in retrospect maybe it made more sense.

PrettyCandles · 25/04/2010 23:00

I thought it was a brilliant book. I don't remember the ending - I remember the twist towards the end, but not the ending itself. It's as if the ending was irrelevant to the book.

I loved the twist.

desertgirl · 25/04/2010 23:07

It's the only one of hers I have read; I found the storyline interesting but hated the style; the writing just didn't seem very good and I thought the characters were unreal - very two dimensional.

Actually for ages after reading it I really wanted to write something based on the same premise, because it was an interesting idea, just seemed so badly executed. Not sure why I thought I would have done any better though!

MPuppykin · 26/04/2010 15:10

I liked the book, but hated the ending also... thought it was a complete cop out. Have not seen the movie. Agree, they all seem the same.

elsiepiddock · 02/05/2010 19:20

My friend made me read it.

I hated it and wished I hadn't bothered.

Poorly written, formulaic pile of poo.
