It's a 3-in-1
The Crystal Cave
The Hollow Hills
Wildfire at Midnight

It's been ages since I discovered a new (to me) writer I really liked....

Any fans out there? Have googled her and it seems like I've been missing out!

I loved those books when I went through my King Arthur stage It was many years ago since I have read them though and I don't remember reading any of her others.

boogeek · 19/04/2010 20:40

I read them as a teen too! Really enjoyed.

Lonicera · 19/04/2010 20:40

I remember reading those years ago

Lonicera · 19/04/2010 20:41

have just googled her others - I have read most of them.

duckyfuzz · 19/04/2010 20:42

I really enjoyed reading her as a teen too, loved them

rosiejoy · 19/04/2010 20:42

excellent!
I was worried you were all going to slate me because it's not 'literature'!

Am enjoying a bit of a fantasy phase right now!

I love her historical books. Not so keen on her thriller-type novels.

MmeLindt · 19/04/2010 20:43

A German friend gave me one of her books, I think she is quite popular there. I really liked them but have not read them for ages, must dig them out.

Goblinchild · 19/04/2010 20:47

I read my mum's copies as a teen, I remember 'This Rough magic' being a favourite, and 'My Brother Michael' After the Merlin ones of course.

Lonicera · 19/04/2010 20:48

Airs above the ground - lippizaners

CirrhosisByTheSea · 19/04/2010 20:55

ooh Rosie you are in for a treat

that trilogy is one of my all time favourites...read it years ago, must have been late teenage and just got lost in it...sigh

enjoy!

I've just read 'Thornyhold' of hers. It's a short novel, nothing huge but really charming

I love Mary Stewart!

CirrhosisByTheSea · 19/04/2010 20:57

err Wildfire at Midnight is not the last book of the trilogy though, you should have The Last Enchantment instead IIRC?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 19/04/2010 21:01

Yes, should be The Last Enchantment.

I love her books - Madame Will You Talk and Airs Above the Ground are both lovely. There is one about horses in Ireland, can't remember the title but it is a little darker than her others.

rosiejoy · 19/04/2010 21:02

ah, thanks, I was trying to work out if it was in the trilogy peopel keep mentioning.

I searched the book I bought on Amazon and it's a bit of an odd collection really.

"This bumper volume contains 3 major novels by Mary Stewart."

Seems a bit silly to put 2 books of a trilogy together and then something totally different but maybe it will make sense when I've read them.....marketing ploy maybe so I have to buy another book to get the last of the trilogy....

I am inspired to go out and get more of hers now - there are loads I haven't read. how exciting!

Katisha · 19/04/2010 21:06

The Hollow Hills and The Crystal Cave are among my favourite books ever. The Last Enchantment wasn't quite as good though, I felt.

EricNorthmansmistress · 19/04/2010 21:24

She's great! I loved them as a teen and re-read thornyhold every now and then.

jurisfictionoperative · 19/04/2010 23:38

I always liked 'touch not the cat'. X

arcticwind · 19/04/2010 23:52

I have most of hers and they are great

gremlindolphin · 24/04/2010 22:08

Loved her, can't remember any of the titles except perhaps My Brother Michael?

Ponders · 24/04/2010 22:12

Touch Not the Cat is the only one of hers I've ever read - just bought it by chance in a 2nd hand shop - it's wonderful!

cyteen · 24/04/2010 22:27

This has reminded me of The Little Broomstick, a book I loved as a child.

nighbynight · 24/04/2010 22:29

Nine Coaches Waiting - very romantic, Jane Eyre heroine saves a little boy from being murdered by his wicked uncle.

Mary Stewart is one of my all time favourites.

madcapmyrtle · 25/04/2010 22:27

Rosiejoy - thank you for this thread...I read Mary Stewart as a teenager in the 1970s, borrowing my mother's books, and loved them. Well-written and gripping stories - may have to do a search on Amazon or Abebooks! 'The Ivy Tree', 'Madam Will You Talk?' and 'My Brother Michael' were favourites!

LoveTheCarbs · 07/05/2010 20:10

Oh, I remember the Ivy Tree. I read that as a teenager and loved it. It's making me smile just thinking about it. I may have to find it somewhere and read it again.
