Rebeccas tale by sally beauman, anyone read it/any opinions?

Is that the sequel version? If so, I read it quite a few years ago. Rather depressing I thought.

itsybitsy08 · 18/04/2010 15:45

Yeah thats the one, just wondering if it was worth a read...

I've read it. I enjoyed it the first time (holiday read), but now it seems a bit histrionic.

janeite · 18/04/2010 17:37

No - it is not worth reading. It's rubbish.

bluejeans · 18/04/2010 17:51

I read it a few years ago as I love 'Rebecca' - it passed the time but is totally unmemorable now

choosyfloosy · 18/04/2010 17:53

haven't read Rebecca's tale, but have read Mrs de Winter by Susan Hill, which I'm afraid was deeply dull.

It takes quite a lot to make a book as special as Rebecca IMO.

itsybitsy08 · 18/04/2010 17:55

Thanks all! Well seems so far its not worth it! Shame, thought it might have been okay for a little light reading, obv didnt think it would live up to rebecca, but still was hopeful! Never mind!

Fine as a trashy beach read but nothing more IMHO.

Arcadie · 18/04/2010 19:39

Much preferred Rebecca's Tale to Mrs de Winter which was frankly depressing. Rebecca's tale better done all round.

cyteen · 18/04/2010 19:43

Someone in my book club suggested this, as she absolutely loves it and reads it every year. I couldn't get into it at all, very boring stuff. Then again, I was surprisingly underwhelmed by Rebecca.

UnrequitedSkink · 18/04/2010 19:51

I liked it - it's lightweight and I can't really remember it in depth now, but I definitely enjoyed it at the time. I'd say worth a read.

PS - currently reading 'Daphne' by Justine Picardie, which is a fictionalised account of Daphne du Maurier researching her book on Branwell Bronte - is v good!

gailforce1 · 18/04/2010 20:25

Unrequited - also thought Justine Picardie's "Daphne" was v. good. Would recommend!

janeite · 18/04/2010 20:30

I hated 'Daphne' - mainly for the fact that it was so badly punctuated that the sentences just meandered on and on and on and never actually got anywhere except for the odd spliced comma. Or non-sentence. Like those ones.

Would have been much better with a good dose of semi-colons. In fact, it irritated me so much that I posted on MN about it!

fishie · 18/04/2010 20:33

i have read mrs dw and rebeccas tale. can't remember a thing about either of them.

daphne not sounding good either.

tillyfernackerpants · 18/04/2010 21:00

I enjoyed Rebecca's Tale at the time but it is unmemorable! Definite beach read

jabberwocky · 19/04/2010 02:54

Oh, I think I was thinking of Mrs. de Winter. Perhaps I haven't read Rebecca's Tale after all.

skihorse · 20/04/2010 07:07

I read Rebecca's Tale when it first came out and remember two things:

i) We never find out her name
ii) The conversations in the rose garden

Elasticwoman · 20/04/2010 08:06

Hated it. Felt the author had changed the characters established by the original book.
