The Time Traveler's Wife..?

DramaInPyjamas · 10/04/2010 13:55

Was in charity shop today and bought The Time Traveler's wife..
(It was 2 for a £1 - other book I bought was Marley & Me)

Anyway, is it worth reading? I don't want to invest time in it if it's shite half way through..
Reading is a rare treat for me these days (too busy) and don't want to waste my time.. Or should I just watch the movie instead?

another loved vote here. i really liked it, the last chapter made me cry.

Seems like a 50:50 love/hate divide over this book!
Have some DH/DC-free time this weekend so I'm FINALLY going to try and get stuck into it.
Thanks for your opinions, will let you know how I get on with it!

It's a great book - the film is OK, but not as good. My DH and I watched the film the other week and had a long discussion as to why the book was different. It is heart wrenchingly sad from about half way through and made me cry alot. But wow - what a book!!

skihorse · 20/04/2010 07:08

Loved it.

As DramaInPyjamas says - it's a total marmite book.

I enjoyed it, but then I thought about it and it annoyed me a lot, and now I rant about it.

It's not a love story at all. It's the story of a selfish, exploitative man and his 'groomed' victim whose entire life is ruined. Which would be fine, if the author had meant it that way, but I don't think she did.

skihorse · 20/04/2010 07:35

Tortoise... well yes, there is that aspect to it! But when reading it I was filled with love, tears & joy.

I really enjoyed it.

Saw the film the other night - now that was disappointing...

christie2 · 05/05/2010 02:06

Hated it. Couldn't finish it. Glad you only paid 50p

thumbwitch · 05/05/2010 02:13

I am in the "loved it" camp - very different. I wouldn't want to see the film though.

But then I like fantasy type literature (BIG fan of Terry Pratchett, Jasper Fforde, that kind of thing).

Having said that, I thought Labyrinth by Kate Mosse was shite.

If you're more of a factual reader it might not work for you.

PositiveAttitude · 05/05/2010 06:29

Loved it!!! Film was disappointing after reading it, but that could just be me as I find films shatter the image I had from reading the book.

Wigeon · 06/05/2010 13:29

Loved it. One of a very very few number of books which have made me cry (the other one I can think of was Goodnight Mr Tom when I was a child). Very engaging. Found the romance / emotions described in it very belivable / realistic.

DH on the other hand thought it was stupid, and thought the premise totally unbelivable. I found it pretty easy to suspend disbelief and got completely drawn into the story!

From this thread looks like people either love or hate it.

Have you started it? Just realised your OP was a while ago!
