"The End of Mr Y" by Scarlett Thomas.

piscesmoon · 05/04/2010 21:59

Sacred Hearts by Sarah Dunant. It is about nuns in 15th century and sounds very uninteresting, but is absolutely gripping-for all ages.

MrsMcJnr · 06/04/2010 12:30

I'm enjoying "The Pure Land" by Alan Spence. Total escapism. It is about a young man from Aberdeen who goes to Japan at the turn of the last century to make his fortune, there is a bit of everything including a love story

'One Day' by David Nicholls. Easy to read love story which makes you both laugh out loud and reach for a box of tissues.

DolceeBanana · 06/04/2010 13:30

Ruby - Absolutely ...loved Girl with Dragon Tattoo too... have just finished Girl who played with fire...it's excellent too!

BunnyLebowski · 06/04/2010 13:37

I finished Girl With Dragon Tattoo this morning after starting it on Saturday!

Fan-BLOODY-tastic!

BunnyLebowski · 06/04/2010 13:41

But OP it's definitely not a light read although nowhere near as shocking as some mners make out.

Sarah Dunant's The Birth of Venus is a gorgeous book. Set in Renaissance Florence it's a love story/family saga set against art/violence/religious mania. Brilliant!

stickylittlefingers · 06/04/2010 13:48

have you worked your way through the PD James' - they're easy to read but quite gripping I think (disclaimer - I never watch that sort of thing on TV)

I read Tim Binding's "Island Madness" just recently - a sort of murder mystery set on Guernsey in WWII - which I found gripping and really interesting too.

I think Margaret Atwood comes into this category too - read a lot of hers while bfing (and a lot of Arnold Bennett, too)

The Moonstone;
AA Milne - The Red House - a v amusing detective story;
Sherlock Holmes;
Susan Hill - can't remember but a couple of good ghost stories.

clemette · 06/04/2010 20:32

A secon vote for One Day. Have just finished it and it was brilliant.

frazzled74 · 06/04/2010 23:09

Good easy crime/thriller reads for me

Minette Walters
Lisa Gardner
Harlan Coben

All in a similar sort of vein as Jodi Picoult, but better I think.

Love the Girl With Dragon Tatoo series, but found they don't really pick up the pace until midway through. Great read though.

piscesmoon · 07/04/2010 08:20

I have just started The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo-I think that it will be good once I have got into it.

Ooh I am so jealous of you that you have only just started that book Ruby, the end is and you literally can't put it down. I just got The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest on pre-order from Amazon, came through yesterday and am already into it, they are fantastic!

Have you tried any other Sarah Waters OP? If you haven't, try Fingersmith, it is brilliant. I enjoyed The Little Stranger but it did drag at times, Fingersmith is real page-turning stuff.

Nux · 09/04/2010 23:18

Oh and just have to say yes, definitely to the End of Mr Y, that is a fantastic book, good call Cote

realitychick · 12/04/2010 17:57

Try Tell No One by Harlen Coben. The best thriller I have ever read, though everyone says Girl with Dragon Tattoo is brilliant and I'm hoping to borrow it from a friend soon.
