Books for convalescing...?

My friend is about to go into hospital for an smallish operation. She is an intellectual-type lady (ie not a chick-lit type of gal) and I would love to get her something to take into hospital with her. Normally I steer well clear of buying novels for people as personal taste can be so hit and miss, but I just wondered if anyone has any recommendations of books that are stimulating/moving/un-put-downable but not so heavy that they would not aid recovery ...? TIA MPD

Didn't want you to go unanswered misspolly, - I've been reading and enjoying Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel, - I think its out in paperback now. A lot of people I know have enjoyed the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - I haven't read it yet but i think it may well fit in the unputdownable category.

I gave my adult DS 'The Reluctant Fundamentalist' for Christmas, and he said he it was very thought provoking and interesting.

What type of thing is she keen on?

this might also be helpful - its last year's Booker prize shortlist - you might find something on there she'd like.

I've seen people on here recommend the Children's Book, The Little Stranger and Sea of Poppies from that list.

The Believers-Zoe Heller
One Day -David Nicholls
Heartburn Nora Ephron
Dougalas Kennedy novels
All well written but easy to read.
