I have finally read it! Would anybody like to discuss it with me?

Nobody? I thought it was a MN favourite?

Oh I loved it, but it was so long ago I read it, I'm not great on the details. Did you enjoy it?

harecare · 26/02/2010 20:12

I read it ages ago. Is it the one where he talks in a high voice and is very small and then saves small high voiced people? I liked it, but I'm sure there were a lot of very dull sort of preachy bits in it that I just skimmed over.

Aduby · 26/02/2010 20:14

Have just started reading this, did it take you a while to get into? Only a couple of chapters in but so far not finding it a 'cant put down'.....

Hassled · 26/02/2010 20:16

It's one of those books I have to reread - I loved it when I read it. It stayed with me for a long time afterwards - I went through an irritating phase of buying it as birthday presents for just about everyone I know.

janeite · 26/02/2010 20:16

Yes - it took me a long time to get into it. I did enjoy it but the preachy bits were annoying. It would have been much better if it was half as long, I thought. Some fab bits but lots and lots of waffle.

A mn favourite? I bet they've all forgotten it.

Something about a driveway, couple in car, accident, penis, sticks in my mind.

Is any of that right?

allstarsprincess · 26/02/2010 20:43

'Nuns, nuns, reverse, reverse' I loved this story. DH read it as well (I made him) and we still talk about it. Such a wonderful story.

pointysayhiphip · 26/02/2010 20:44

yes, but what exactly is it that happens on teh driveway? It's somethign terrible, isn't it?

SixtyFootDoll · 26/02/2010 20:45

I have read it and I KNOW I loved it, but bugger me I cannot remember anything about it!
IS it the one where his mother was a nurse?

janeite · 26/02/2010 20:47

There was plenty of penis, for sure. Baby Jesus with an erection stood out. Mother is a secret singer in a bar. Nuns have a special role. I think I missed the driveway.

janeite · 26/02/2010 20:47

The bit with the car on the stage was fab.

pointysayhiphip · 26/02/2010 20:48

I don't remember any of that penis. Maybe I'm thinking of that other book of his. I'm sure the dark wet driveway scene was critical and unforgetable. What's his other thivk book that I have read?

SixtyFootDoll · 26/02/2010 20:49

No sorry I am thinking of THe World According to Garp

Portofino · 26/02/2010 20:50

Tis a fab book! I love the way all the odd things come together and make sense at the end. Then he dies

I spent ages trying to imagine what he looks like.

janeite · 26/02/2010 20:52

I thought some of the 'clues' were rather laboured. Eg I knew who his father was REALLY early on - and how he died. Was bored by all the Canada stuff.

OP posts:
pointysayhiphip · 26/02/2010 20:52

Garp, that's the one! That one has a driveway, accident, rainy, couple, penis scene, doesn't it?

pointysayhiphip · 26/02/2010 20:53

Is canada stuff ever interesting?

janeite · 26/02/2010 20:53

The only other one I have read was 'A Widow For One Year' which I also thought was overlong and too sex-obsessed.

Hotel New Hampshire is really good too. I think the Water Method Man was OK, but not one you'd go out of your way to recommend.

janeite · 27/02/2010 18:05

Not read Hotel NH but seen the film - VERY weird!

I LOVE it! Read it twice within a couple of years about 18 years ago so don't remember much about it. I remember not getting hooked on it til after about 50 pages. Also remember laughing out loud at the baby Jesus part - hilarious.

Also read World...Garp, Hotel New Hampshire, Cider House Rules, Widow for a year, something about a hand transplant? (can't remember title) - most of the read whilst I was working/backpacking in Oz & Asia, so pretty easy reading. Loved them all, I think he's a fab writer.

LittlePushka · 27/02/2010 21:38

Oh I have got prayer for Owen meany and have tried a couple of times to get into it and have not done too well. Will try again on the recommendations above.

I think what put me off is that my copy has teeny tiny print and it is real hard work to read.

NormaSknockers · 28/02/2010 09:34

I've not read this but have heard it mentioned a lot, worth reading would you say?

I've just started The Time Travellers Wife
