I'm interested due to the hype of the film.

i enjoyed the book,
the film is meant to be rubbish though.

PrincessFiorimonde · 22/02/2010 23:38

Wouldn't say I 'loved' it. But thought it was a good read.

I used to read a lot, but am now finding that MN and RL means that I read only a few books a year (to my shame). So I quickly abandon books that don't grab my attention within the first, say, 40 pages.

This one did.

duchesse · 22/02/2010 23:39

It was all right, but not in line with the hype. I read a similar but arguably better children's book on a very similar theme at roughly the same time.

electra · 22/02/2010 23:46

imo, no! I didn't like it......

I've just spent the last three hours reading the last two-thirds of this book it's the only book I've done that with in the last ten years since uni I really enjoyed it

Pogleswood · 23/02/2010 19:00

I liked it,and thought it was an interesting "take" on the subject.I didn't think it was badly written either! But I can't see it making a good film.(I was discussing this with DH just this morning!)

onebadbaby · 23/02/2010 19:05

Started it, but could never get to the end-found it a bit dull to be honest- maybe the end was good though-sadly I will never know.

stinkypinky · 23/02/2010 19:15

I enjoyed it - different, and easy to read. Bit disappointed in the ending, but interesting concept. I will not be watching the film until on TV as not likely to be great.

alibubbles · 24/02/2010 08:06

In a word...no!

BooToYouToo · 24/02/2010 19:20

Loved it but ending was a bit of a let down, onebadbaby. Will never be considered great literature but found the way the author contrasted some of the grisly details which left me feeling with immediately afterwards a beautiful description of heaven to be really effective.

Vintagepommery · 25/02/2010 10:50

Yes it's worth reading - I found it a real page turner - saying that I felt it had a couple of big flaws towards the end of the book that spoilt it somewhat for me.

SiriusStar · 25/02/2010 11:00

I found the first half interesting but then it stalled. I was a disappointed with the ending.

irishnana · 26/02/2010 22:31

i've just seen the movie and thought it was awful and wondering if the book wud be better?

AshleyFanjo · 27/02/2010 20:17

I thought the first half was a page-turner, the second half dragged and the ending was very disappointing verging on ridiculous.

RunningOutOfNames · 27/02/2010 20:22

It's the only book that's ever made me cry in the first couple of pages. I accept that it's not great literature but loved it anyway. It's a while since I read it but I thought it was incredibly upbeat and optimistic considering the subject matter. I went on to read Lucky which was about the author's experience of being raped whilst at college and was amazed that she'd been able to write LB.

taipo · 27/02/2010 20:25

No

NormaSknockers · 28/02/2010 09:32

I liked it. Was pretty easy to read & didn't require much thought

poshsinglemum · 28/02/2010 23:01

Ok- I won't bother reading it then.

OP posts:
SpeedyGonzalez · 28/02/2010 23:02

Loved it but I thought it dragged on in the last few chapters and turned into ridiculous mawkish crap. Such a shame as the first 3/4 of the story were great.

BigWoo · 08/03/2010 15:25

I thought it was a very good idea very badly executed. It would have taken a writer with far greater power than Ms Sebold to make this turkey fly. I thought it was clinical, detached and massively over-explained. I couldn't wring a single drop of emotion out of myself for the dead narrator, and I slated the whole thing on every point in book club. I won't talk about the bit I really hated because I don't want to do spoilers for people who are trying to read it, but it IS tosh. This could be a case of the film being a better bet than the book - though I doubt it.

LouMacca · 08/03/2010 16:08

Totally agree with Speedy.

I have just read it after all the hype about the film and also the fact that several of my friends have raved about it.

I did enjoy the book and would recommend reading it but the way the book ended was a let down and it certainly isn't the classic I was expecting.

jurisfictionoperative · 14/04/2010 19:57

Drivel!I like alternative stuff, but it was pants!

mustrunmore · 14/04/2010 20:00

The book was a real anticlimax, but I have to admit to the film trailer looking good! One of he few times I've ever thought a film to be bettre than a book. Then again, I havent seen the film, only clips!

gremlindolphin · 24/04/2010 22:09

I liked the book and was fascinated with the sink hole!
