I always faff when choosing my book for our bookclub! Would the Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Sociaty be a good one for discussion at bok club or not? Has good reviews but as I've not yet read it, I'm not sure! See, I told you I faff! Advice please!

Yes I would think so, there are lots of different issues covered that would lead to lively discussions, to do with the war, such as fraternising with the enemy, the black market etc.

There are also lots of different characters to judge discuss, and it's informative about the hardships suffered during the occupation too.

It is quite thought provoking, it does make you wonder how you would cope in the same circumstances.

Yes I enjoyed it and there's quite a bit to discuss both in terms of issues/characters/plot and also style (as written purely in letter form which is not that common). I don't normally like books in that style but thought this was well written.

i'm halfway through this book and loving it. i think it would be good for a book club and with it being about a book club its a bit like 'a film within in a film' type thing iykwim?
its so well written, funny and very interesting. i love the old fashioned and very english way they speak, it really transports you to the place. get it!!

My book club did it and it was a good choice. It provoked plenty of chat, on the issues mentioned above and the format. Was a good read and no-one hated it (it's by far the cheeriest war book I've ever read)

PanicMode · 20/01/2010 12:50

Glad to see this - I've suggested it for our book club as I enjoyed it so much and so it's on the agenda later in the year. Good to know that it's worked as a discussion in other groups.

yes los of aspects to talk about

Carrotfly · 20/01/2010 13:01

We have just finished this too (my choice )

For such a short book it was amazing how much we found to talk about.

Everybody enjoyed it.

We've just finised 'the Help' about black maids in America which was fascinating.

Charliemouse500 · 20/01/2010 13:01

Yes, I really enjoyed it and so did my mum and my sister (so people in 30's and people in 60's!) so might be good if the group has a mix of ages? An easy read with good characters

BigBadMummy · 20/01/2010 13:03

Oh I loved this book. Knew nothing about it when I picked it up but read it in almost one sitting.

As other posters have said, lots of aspects to talk about.

Thanks for the great replies - faff over then! Sounds like a great Book Club choice. I love the website as well - you can even send emails that look like letters from the book which I'll use for sending round the invite etc! There is even a recipie for Potato Peel Pie! (OWW wonders if she may be taking things a tad too far now!)
