By Kate Atkinson and loved it!

But can't believe how different it is to 'When will there be good news', which is the only other one of hers I've read.
Feels like two different writers.

Found it hard to get my head round all the characters and how they are all related and enjoyed the first half (Ruby's childhood) more than second half but found it totally un-putdownable, and very well-written, especially as it was her first novel.

Anyone else love it?

I loved it read it ages ago and was also surprised when I read her newer ones as I personally like her first one the best.

You might also like 'Human Croquet' in that case, kimlouiseb - it's another early Kate Atkinson and more 'Behind the Scenes'-ish than her later stuff.

Can't remember much about it, but I remember really liking both it and 'behind the scenes', and finding her newer stuff very different.

Thanks will definitely check that one out Aniyan

ThatVikRinA22 · 06/01/2010 22:49

do you know youve just reminded me that i lent that one out and never got it back.

5Foot5 · 07/01/2010 20:26

I think it astonishingly good for a first novel.

malovitt · 10/01/2010 09:05

Her earlier stuff is way better than her later offerings - I nearly threw WWTBGN in the bin - dreadful.

CDMforever · 10/01/2010 17:00

I LOVED it too though also like her later novels. BTSATM definitely her best.

wolfbrother · 10/01/2010 18:43

Loved it when it first came out.
Went through an embarrassing few weeks of giving it to everyone I knew, sealed with the statement/kiss of death:"You will love this!"

Must read it again, but MUST NOT OBSESS

MissWooWoo · 11/01/2010 12:36

yes I thought it was very good indeed. Am not into detective stories so have steered clear of her latest ones

Northernlurker · 11/01/2010 12:55

Yes it's fantastic and her later stuff is total rubbish. I read one of the detective ones over holiday in 2008 and was SO disappointed by the ending. All the way through I had thought there was a really clever twist/reason and I just couldn't get it and no in the end it was just plain and simple child abuse - horrible and oddly flat after the rest of the book. It's rare I read a book and actively hate it - I'm pretty easy going but I did hate that book.

BalloonSlayer · 11/01/2010 13:02

I loved it too.

I didn't like Human Croquet at all. I think I bought another of her newer ones and gave up after the first page.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/01/2010 13:07

yes read Human Croquet, it is marvellous.

Was WWTBGN the most recent one? I thought it was better than the previous detective ones. Had to love Dr Hunter with her murderous underbelly and her talk of pudding stomachs? That's become an everyday term around here since I read it!
