Does anyone have an Amazon Kindle?

paranoidmother · 03/01/2010 19:42

Dh gave me a Kindle for Christmas and I have managed to get a few books via Amazon.com although a few authors are not signed up for this yet.

Doe anyone have any hints or tips on using a kindle.

So far I love it and am thrilled to have one. It's meant I will be able to take loads of stories with me everywhere as I can get through a book an evening sometimes if there is nothing else to do.

What I do is go onto Amazon (on the PC) and go to the Kindle store.
If you click on 'fiction' for instance and then change the view to Price low-high you get hundreds of pages of free books.

Its handy for me at the moment as I am skint so its still free entertainment.

i have asked my dh for one for my Birthday in a few weeks. I can't wait to get my hands on one. DH can't wait for me to start getting rid of the books in the spare room. The local Hospice is going to love me!

I am now the proud owner of a shiny new knidle. Dh bought me one for my birthday next week but has let be have it this morning Grin

Another proud Kindle owner here. I bought it chiefly for holidays as I am retired and spend quite a lot of time away from home. Saves an enormous amount of weight in luggage. It is great to read - I got used to it very quickly.

Something I discovered this morning might be useful for others Kindle owners. I inadvertently bought an e-book last night whilst demonstrating the Kindle's wonders to a friend (too much to drink!). This morning I found I had a copy of this unwanted book on my Kindle. When you buy an e-book you get the option to cancel the purchase, but I had overlooked that. I telephoned the Kindle helpdesk (number in the user guide) and a very helpful young man deleted the book and refunded the money.

got one for xmas.hate it.used 3-4times

dyzzidi · 23/01/2011 20:35

why do you hate it?

MamaVoo · 23/01/2011 20:37

Yep, I got one for Christmas from DH and it lives unused in the cupboard. It would have been great when I was working and was reading on the train everyday. I'll try to use it more once I exhaust all my proper books.

scottishmummy · 23/01/2011 20:39

too much of a faff compared to a book.feels weird reading on screen.i feel a bit of a spud getting ot out in public.geeky

Mumcentreplus · 23/01/2011 20:39

scottishmummy · 23/01/2011 20:40

Mumcentreplus · 23/01/2011 20:41

but you are a geek!..reading a book alone heightens your geek level...are you reading one without a best-seller sticker?...thats extra geek points...is it a classic...geek over-load..join usss Grin

scottishmummy · 23/01/2011 20:44

def im a book geek, but the aesthetics and practicalities of kindle are annoying to me. and not all stuff i want is on kindle

Mumcentreplus · 23/01/2011 20:45

I like the idea of having loads of books in one place...I like to have a book pile..would be cool to have it at hand esspecially on the move...but i understand where you are coming from...I like the feel of a good solid book and the easy page turning of well read book..

Mumcentreplus · 23/01/2011 20:47

give it time..they will improve the library I'm sure..get a groovy case for it..Grin

MrsPresley · 23/01/2011 21:45

I treated myself to a Kindle today and I love love love it already!!

Been sat here downloading some free books, determined not to pay for any at the moment as the books I want to read I have on reserve at the library Smile

So far i started reading "Incidents in the life of a slave girl" and up to now it's really good.

Also downloaded 3 Scottish history books, The Jungle book, Oliver Twist and Alice in Wonderland.

I love the way when I switch I off theres a different picture on the screen Grin

Does anyone know if I can set it to one particular picture? I really would like to keep the Mark Twain picture on it

ummusa · 24/01/2011 17:09

I have a kindle, i recently brought myself one and all i can say is that it is brilliant :). Now i can read a book any time i feel bored, before i wasn't an avid book reader but i i've read two books just this month alone.

Lillyofthevalley · 24/01/2011 17:44

DP bought mine for me for my birthday last year and I LOVE IT. So much easier then reading a book as you can alter the size of the font and line spacing.

Currently reading the complete works of Jane Austin which I downloaded for 71p! Pride and Prejudice done, now on Emma.

Also recomend the cover with the light - no more getting moaned at 'can you turn that light off' lol

Pigletinho · 24/01/2011 21:18

Why not just use your library?

SnailWhaleTail · 24/01/2011 21:30

Can I also recommend Project Guttenburg (I think I have elsewhere) for free downloads in mobi format. I have just finished the Katy Carr series by Susan Coolidge and am off to bed with Sherlock Holmes this eve.

pipsqueak · 24/01/2011 23:10

love my kindle - i got it when i went on hols for 2 weeks and on a lowcost flight with weight restrictions. the onlyu draw back for me is not being able to lend books i ahve enjoyed to others.

Bumperlicious · 24/01/2011 23:17

Libraries will eventually move to ebooks anyway.

BecauseImWorthIt · 25/01/2011 11:29

You can lend Kindle books to other Kindle owners though, pipsqueak.

I discovered that you can send documents to your Kindle. As I travel quite a lot for work, I thought that was a really useful feature - I don't always want to lug my laptop around with me.

And so, yesterday, when an important project brief arrived, I forwarded it from my iPhone to the Kindle. It's so much easier to read it on the the larger screen.

However just to warn you if you're thinking of doing that, you get charged for it. It was only 20p, so not exactly breaking the bank, but there was no warning of that, which I thought was a bit naughty.

silverfrog · 25/01/2011 11:31

BIWI - if you go into your Kindle account on Amazon (manage my Kindle, or similar) it does say there about the charge, and you can set maximum fees etc.

Agree it shoudl have a pop up though.

BecauseImWorthIt · 25/01/2011 11:41

Trouble is, silverfrog, I've been reading all the Kindle stuff/features about Kindle on my Kindle!

silverfrog · 25/01/2011 11:44

oh, me too. I only know that is there because i had to go into it to change the email address I had registered my kindle to (via amazon, naturally), as wanted to use a differetn addy for ease of using Calibre...
