Does anyone have an Amazon Kindle?

Dh gave me a Kindle for Christmas and I have managed to get a few books via Amazon.com although a few authors are not signed up for this yet.

Doe anyone have any hints or tips on using a kindle.

So far I love it and am thrilled to have one. It's meant I will be able to take loads of stories with me everywhere as I can get through a book an evening sometimes if there is nothing else to do.

I read mine in the bath

RolandButter · 06/12/2010 15:57

i dont see the point of it.
i just buy a book
if i lose it then hey no issue
no shit with uploading and syncing and insurance and crap

reinventing wheel imo

You don't need the cover with the light. It doesn't matter that the kindle isn't backlit - a book isn't backlit. So if you're reading an ordinary book and it gets dark you put the room light/lamp on. Ditto for a kindle.

SpotSplatterSplash · 06/12/2010 16:08

Do you CMOTdibbler? I only very rarely have a bath (normally shower) but would be interested to know if it would be affected.

Books are very expensive, I read maybe three or four a week. So I will be quids in.

I have bought and downloaded over 500 books , since I have ordered mine. So I will be quite happy for 2011 Grin

ChickensHaveNoMercyForTurkeys · 06/12/2010 16:10

You can buy a waterproof jacket thingy for bath reading.

RolandButter · 06/12/2010 17:58

You need to buy books on eBay.

SpotSplatterSplash · 06/12/2010 20:43

Not now I don't!

The only thing I'll miss is the smell of paper.

I can manage that for the bonus of not having loads of books on my bedroom floor and resorting to reading DH's crap books when I have run out.

careergirl · 06/12/2010 22:57

It saves me a fortune - you can download works by Dickens, Austen et al for either free or pence. That compares to buying an actual book in say Waterstones for about £5.99
Other books retail approximately about the same as if you actually bought the book.
Real boon not to have piles of books cluttering up the place!
Wouldnt risk reading it in the bath though personally I'm too clumsy

RolandButter · 06/12/2010 22:57

so buy a book
like most people read enough Dickens to make it worth while!

SpotSplatterSplash · 07/12/2010 08:29

You can buy ebooks on Ebay too...

SpotSplatterSplash · 07/12/2010 08:32

Ahh Roland, you're making me feel guilty and traitorous now.

I'm not defecting completely, just here and there Smile

strumpet82 · 07/12/2010 08:57

Can you really buy ebooks on ebay??

I wasn't aware of that.

Ooh, now even more tempted...

SpotSplatterSplash · 07/12/2010 10:40

I think some of them may be a little illegal though.

I'm not sure if the quality is the same either. I have a disc on it's way to me, so I'll see soon what it's like.

There are plenty of reasonably priced ebooks on Amazon/Waterstones anyway and also free ebooks from sites such as manybooks, Amazon etc.

I suppose it all depends on whether you want the newest releases or if (like me) you'd read the back of a cereal packet if you got desperate enough.

ChippyMinTurnAgainWhittington · 07/12/2010 20:18

Roland -"no shit with uploading and syncing"
Amazon delivers the book straight to the kindle via wifi.
The other night I was in bed, finished my book and thought, I really fancy reading the Pillars of the Earth RIGHT NOW. One click on the kindle et voila, 30 seconds later I was ploughing into Chapter One.

SpotSplatterSplash · 07/12/2010 21:24

Is it that quick? They just charge your card?

Hmmm, even better.

larazy · 08/12/2010 05:57

I still prefer the paperpack as I'm sick of staring any screens.

DanielleI · 08/12/2010 12:28

may sound old fashion i don't think I could use a kindle there is still something about holding the book itself

MistletoeAndWhineWithMe · 08/12/2010 13:54

I am in love with mine and you forget you are looking at a screen.

I love that you can get samples before you buy so you don't end up paying for a dud book.

MistletoeAndWhineWithMe · 08/12/2010 13:55

SSS- It is very fast no usb cables or downloading you just click and the book is on your Kindle in under a minute.

ChippyMinTurnAgainWhittington · 08/12/2010 16:26

You have to have your amazon account set up for 'one click' purchasing. Your kindle is linked to your amazon account, so it's your kindle to send the book to.

Because the screen is not back-lit it doesn't feel like you are looking at a screen. And you still have to hold the device and click to 'turn' the page, so like a book but slimmer, lighter and less unwieldy.

SpotSplatterSplash · 08/12/2010 22:02

Thanks ladies - I have my account set. Just have to get my Kindle and I am ready!

I have looked at one and they are great, it really didn't feel like I was looking at a screen. I can imagine that it feels like a book when you are reading.

LionsnTigersnBears · 13/12/2010 17:06

I got a kindle because DD would only sleep on my chest, its impossible to turn pages one handed and daytime tv had me trying to eat my own face off in desperation. As soon as she went in the cot, the kindle went on the shelf and I've not touched the dreadful thing since (the kindle that is, not the daughter).

Have you tried gigapedia? Its a good source for books

simpson · 26/12/2010 20:32

I have ordered my kindle today (Xmas money) and am soooo excited!!!

I want it to arrive now!!

roisin · 26/12/2010 21:07

Do you have a case for your Kindle? The Amazon ones are very expensive, might get one from Ebay.

TinselinaBumSquash · 26/12/2010 21:12

I got a Kindle from DP for Xmas, i love it i have already read one book on it and its great. I am a bit dissapointed that you can't get the harry Potter books on it, hopefully they will be availiable in future then i can put my valuable copies somewhere safe!
There are a coupleof authours not on there which is a shame but i have discovered all of the famous 5 books that i will get as they are cheap and i do love to read books from my childhood!
i haven't had a good look over it yet on the browser or any of the other 'experimentals' but i am in love with it and will be taking it wth me everywhere, especially usefull for hospital visits with ds and college.
