the point of the last chapter?

i finished it last night and just cried and cried and cried. the book would have been finished without it, i really didnt feel it was needed.

does anyone feel any diffrent and if so why?

I was really surprised at the last chapter although when I looked on Jodie's website alot of people had guessed that is what happened (I hadn't).

Having read a few of her books they are all very similar (or I think so anyway).

Thought it was really good until the last chapter which was a shame.

Yes, I really didn't get that at all. To be honest, for me that book had the feel of something written because My Sister's Keeper was such a success. I don't have a problem with a formulaic light read, but I thought this one was just too similar to My Sister's Keeper. The ending was a bit as if she'd tried to do another dramatic twist, but I didn't really get it, and didn't like it either.

i'm glad i'm not the only one! i've never read one of her books before, and was really disapointed with it, but i think i'll read my sisters keeper next and see what thats like

dont go for my sisters keeper next! its so like handle with care in every way that i was incredibly irritated reading it(handle with care) and there was 3 years between reading reading the two books for me. perfect match was her most skilful book imo, very impressive although sad and any of those that came after my sisters keeper, before she recently started turning them out too quickly, her writing went downhill and they all came to seem the same...

BigBadMummy · 04/01/2010 00:05

I agree. I didnt like the final chapter.

And I am finding her very formulaic now which is a shame because I used to get excited when a new book came out.

claudialyman · 04/01/2010 00:08

its awful when that happens. i used to really look forward to her next book too. wouldnt bother now.

TheFoosa · 04/01/2010 08:21

Is this Jodie Picoult?

I think all her early stuff has been released on the back of the success of Sister's Keeper and her earlier work is weaker

she is formulaic though, I found 19 Minutes to be her best book

scrappydappydoo · 04/01/2010 08:38

Agree I didn't like the last chapter - it just didn't fit with the rest of the book... although it did leave me wondering if they cashed the cheque afterwards..

I agree she is getting very formulaic - perfect match i found quite irritating - it was like she was trying to be Dan Brown or something and all the explanation conversations seemed so set and staged - the dialogue was awful.

addictedtomn · 04/01/2010 10:24

it says in the final receipie at the end that she didnt cash the cheque (i went through everything trying to work out if she survived and trying to find a clue as to why it had happened)

i might leave jodie picoult then, try something else.

i think i'm so annoyed because its the first book i've picked up and read in 12 months (i'm not a reader) and didnt want to read something with an ending like that. back to the drawing board then

JP's Plain Truth is wonderful! And Tenth Circle for something a bit different. Have struggled with a few though, especially Mercy.

StanleyFletcher · 04/01/2010 10:46

I have just finished 19 minutes over the holidays and I thought it was a good book. I have read a few of hers before (started with My Sister's Keeper' but I could not name titles (which should tell me something eh?) but I do like her for an easy read.

Is Plain Truth the one about the Amish? I have read that...

CurlyCasper · 04/01/2010 10:53

yes, that's the one Stanley It was the first JP I read, so I have a soft spot for it.

I've read quite a few JP books, but not my Sister's Keeper (wierdly!)
I like the way she delves into a different culture for each story, but my faith in her accuracy was reduced when I read Mercy. As I Scot, I knew a few of her Scottish cultural references were wrong. It made we wonder if all I had learned about the Amish, Eskimos, American Indians etc in other books was less than reliable too...

I'm struggling with Second Glance now and have been since summer... Might have to give up.

SweetestThing · 04/01/2010 17:51

I enjoyed Keeping Faith as well.

bness · 16/02/2010 16:01

I agree; I've read alot of her books and after the first few when you are like WOW, all the characters tend to speak the same way, think in the same way, and the descriptions and style becomes tedious. I just skip to the parts where stuff happens now.

Handle with care was awful! Too many things, too little depth, and way too formulaic.

Anyone tried the recipes?

mandylifeboats · 29/04/2010 16:14

She didn't cash the cheque, she put it in the coffin with Willow!
