i havent completed the book yet.
it started out superbly. well written, well imagined, brilliant. but now, half way through, and all it reminds me off is bella, edward, and jacob. and that too, bella at her asolute worst, when i wanted to whack her with a wet dishtowel to knock some sense into her. ........ will all this authors books be about the same characters? tell me it gets better please.

Nope.

I skim read a large chunk of the second half as it became so crap.

Sorry.

JaneiteMightBite · 12/12/2009 18:25

I thought it was better than the Twilight books (only read it because friend insisted). It is dreadfully badly written and about 250 pages too long but as a love story, it actually isn't bad towards the end.

TheFoosa · 12/12/2009 18:59

it goes a little soggy in the middle, but the last bit is quite good

MattBellamysMuse · 12/12/2009 20:50

I liked it.

MattBellamysMuse · 12/12/2009 20:51

The middle does drag a bit but it does improve.

The Sookie Stackhouse books? Charlaine Harris cannot write. The stories are good but I'd skip the books and watch it on TV (True Blood).

TheFoosa · 12/12/2009 21:09

I find the SS books quite difficult to get into

Clary · 12/12/2009 21:13

I had to read it for work and I am afraid (afraid because I was reviewing it) that I didn't even finish it.

I thought it was poorly written as if for a teenager of limited understanding. Don't know if that's how her other books are written btw as haven't read them (nor do I want to now).

Hate hate hate poor writing (occupational hazard perhaps).

I have to disagree. Charlaine Harris is a terrible writer.

vvvodka · 13/12/2009 06:58

The Host would have been brilliant under a better author. The concept of starting the book long after the invasion had taken place was great.

Have you noticed that Mayer steers clear of any true conflict in her books and none of her characters suffer great loss during the books? Example: all the Cullens survive, there is no great battle as such. In The Host the threat is more a constant than any immediate danger which would and should have been a lot more scarier.

Still liked it though! And Twilight books. Sometimes an easy read is enough!

TheFoosa · 13/12/2009 21:16

The Meyer books are aimed at a young audience though

MattBellamysMuse · 13/12/2009 22:54

The Host wasn't.

TwoIfBySea · 14/12/2009 00:06

It was in the same section of Borders (sob) as Twilight but in the adult section of the library (why when I say that does it sound like I read dirty books?)

The writing would indicate a "young adult" audience - which I am not.

MattBellamysMuse · 14/12/2009 12:44

I don't think it matters what section the librarians/bookshop workers put it in.
The author herself said: "I didn't write these books specifically for the young-adult audience. I wrote them for me."

TheFoosa · 14/12/2009 12:49

you're right, it doesn't matter who they are aimed at, the writing should stand for itself

TinselianAstra · 26/12/2009 15:16

"I wrote them for me, and I have the tastes of a 14-year-old"

is what she didn't say

HumBuggerance · 26/12/2009 15:19

I quite enjoyed it until i noticed that none of her characters are ....capable...of completing a sentence...without.....ellipses.
It drove me ...potty.

Now I have....made you all notice it too....

roisin · 26/12/2009 16:15

I bought this for ds1 (12) for Christmas and he read it yesterday and enjoyed it. But he reads a novel nearly every day and doesn't have very discriminating tastes!

MayorNaze · 26/12/2009 16:17

i liked it. but i have the tastes of a 14 year old mostly

TinselianAstra · 26/12/2009 16:20

I enjoyed reading it too, just think that it is, if not directly aimed, at least very definitely suitable for the young adult market.
