I thought it was superficial and the characters were wooden - but then that's just my opinion so I have recommended it to my reading group who are bound to disagree with me.

oh no, really. What about Elizabeth? I loved the funny crazy characters like Isola with her plans for odd careers too.

Never mind read it, I may join it. It sounds unhinged.

Hated it. Book circle chose it and once again, I was in a minority of one hating the book whilst the rest raved.
I thought it was:

• unbelievable
• badly researched
• badly written
• full of clichés
• ending was predictable

wasn't taxing but an engaging read, never really thought about guernsey in ww2 before....kept imagining the journalist as a joyce grenfell type

My sister loved it and sent me a copy,I liked it enough to finish it but would still agree with all Hoppity's points! It really didn't ring true to me,and I was increasingly irritated by the names,which seemed entirely wrong for WW2 Guernsey,though fine for the USA.Maybe I'm in the wrong there though - does anyone know?
I did quite like the London characters,Juliet and her publisher.

There was a thread a while ago about random book name generators, the title sounds like it came from that thread

Thanks for the tip though, have read some utter rubbish recently and need something to catch my interest again.

I really quite enjoyed it but Hoppity is right: it is a bit lightweight.

It wasn't particularly well written and many of the characters were a bit 2 dimensional. The plot was very simple and you might find the sentimentality a bit cloying if you had your clever head on.

But on the positive side is an easy read, Juliet is a pleasant & amusing narrator. I really fancied going on holiday to Guernsey after reading which must mean that was well portrayed.

And I always think it would be very dull if every book was Crime and Punishment.
