I really like the look of the Amazon Kindle, but Im worried that as its not availible in the UK, that it wont work as well over here.

Plus are cheaper models as good as the Sony eReader? Im hoping Father Christmas will bring me one.

I have a Sony eReader. It has good points and bad points, but overall I really like it.

There's a new one coming out early next year I think, from Asus. There was a bit about it in today's Sunday Times.

Sony eReader - love it

Sony e reader. I downloaded 20 books from Waterstones for when I went to Bali in the summer. My case was so much lighter - great! You do need a light though for reading on planes, and I would recommend the Sony one, rather than one that clips on the top.

I have, and love, the Sony e-reader. It's not perfect, but if you are a dedicated reader like myself, it sure cuts down on the piles of paperbacks next to the bed.

I wanted an Amazon kindle because they are wireless, but they don't appear to be coming to the UK for ages, despite an upgraded version being launched in the USA

I like the idea that you can download new books anywhere on the amazon kindle and you dont have to be conected to the internet.

How easy is it to download books onto the sony eReader?

It's easy to download the books to the Sony, but you do need a computer and an internet connection. The biggest downside of the Sony is that you can only buy from Waterstones so you can't shop around for the best price and not everything is available as an ebook.

Sunday Times report here, it looks good but it looks as though the screen is backlit which wouldn't be as comfortable to read as the Sony. Also the Sony is a very comfortable size to hold, the Asus looks bigger, but on the other hand you might also be able to use it as a netbook I think.

Hi I have a Sony e reader and just wanted to flag that you are definitely not limited to buying from Waterstones. You can save any adobe pdf to your desktop and if you plug in your e reader into the computer USB port so it shows as an available hard drive (same as a memory stick would) you can just click and drag the pdf into your e reader on the screen. Its a lot simpler than using the ebook software.

For any out of copyright book (eg Austen or Hardy) don't pay money use the free websites readily available (just google free book downloads) and save as a pdf to your desktop.

Several US presses offer ebooks as downloads cheaper than paper copies (unlike Waterstones) eg Kensington Books.

Hope this helps.

i had a fiddle with ereader. it is lovely but i am lh and it is SO right handed and think i'd always struggle with it.

am very suspicious of the kindle, how does it all work with copyright and amazon market share? would rather have something designed for its own end.

Bleatblurt · 14/09/2009 22:36

I want one but refuse to pay the same price for a download that I'd pay for a real book. Robbing twunts.

But I reeeeeeeeeally want one anyway.
