Desperate for some new reading matter, what are you TOP 5 BOOKS EVER?

Will rack my brains and add mine too..........

I really couldn't pick a top 5, I suppose it depends on where I am in my head as to what I want from a book.

I've enjoyed most of the books mentioned and noted a few to try but would have to add On the Beach by Neville Shute as one of my favourites.

I don't really care who likes sci-fi.
I just wanted to see what you'd say if someone threw your accusation right back at you

so will not mention their wonderful books

not sure I can say top books ever I think they change over time but certainly books that moved me no order

The Year of the death of Ricardo Reis & Blindness - Jose Saramago

The handmaids Tale - Margaret Atwood

Middlemarch - George Eliot

The Lay of the Land - Richard Ford, good end to trilogy

and quite a lot of classic and contemporary sci-fi

To Kill a Mocking Bird
The Bell Jar
Goodnight Mister Tom
The Road

Sakura - I am fairly sure that you don't know what I mean by "sci-fi", hence my comment on your "prejudice".

These are not books about green Martians or battles in space with strange sound effects. J.G. Ballard, for example, tends to write about the here and now. Neal Stephenson writes mostly about the day after tomorrow, when technologies we are exploring now like nanotechnology take hold.

If you would like to reconsider your judgement on the entire genre, I would be happy to give some recommendations.
