Need a Book Group Book - Sci-Fi/Fantasy?!

Jeepers. We have decided this year that we each have to select from a different genre and I have drawn Sci-Fi/Fantasy. I have no idea where to start.

Any tips?

Well, yesterday I retired to bed with Post-Christmas-Stress-Disorder and read Magician in one fell swoop. And I really enjoyed it.

It's very cinematic - I had lots of battle scenes playing in my head whilst reading. And I thought it very "classic" fantasy - dwarves, dragons, elves - all very LOTR - so it fulfilled my prejudices about the genre. However, the characterisation was strong enough for it not to feel too cliched. But one character got renamed Alan Sugar in my head which destroyed the effect that Feist was going for!

All in all a rollicking good read, I thought.
Intial Book Group feedback is that they are all a bit at the length of it.

Well, much later than planned, due to various misunderstandings and postponements, we finally read Magician. And, by and large, they loved it. And a few even said they'd go on to read some more.
So far, its topped the list of books we've read this year - by quite a margin. So, many , many thanks to all for your advise and patience with such a long running saga.

(It's Chris' Evans autiobiog next month - talk about sublime to ridiculous.)

Dune, by Frank Herbert - old-school sci-fi; and a phenomenally good read

Ah - a little late in posting, I see.
