....and if you feel inclined to suggest a pudding please do!

(We do a sort of pot-luck lunch at our meetings you see, whoever is choosing the book does the pudding).

Something short - I think people get fed up of long books. How about something like "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemmingway (I think its only around 100 pages long!).

Ooh have you read 'The Cold Earth' by Sarah Moss?
Very decent first novel...she's written plenty of historical literature which I feel is a good basis for fiction.

It's quite pertinent atm as well due to being about a pandemic!

NationalFlight · 08/06/2009 14:09

Oh scrap the 'the'

here

Cadelaide · 08/06/2009 19:17

Thanks NF, looks good, anyone else?

And where are the puddings you lot? What's your favourite pudding?

Try Under the Skin by Michel Faber - short book but brilliant - my book group loved it anyway

dalek · 08/06/2009 19:22

The book is called "Under the Skin"

The Road Home by Rose Tremain went down very well at ours as does pudding but unfortunately we don't always have one. Bread and butter pudding was particularly good. Chocolate brownies always go down well.

paisleyleaf · 08/06/2009 22:05

I like the look of that Cold Earth
.....with ARCTIC ROLL Cadelaide

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 08/06/2009 22:15

Dalek - another vote for 'Under the Skin'.

Some books which we did and provoked a lot of discussion are 'Veronika Decides to Die', 'The Time Travelers Wife' and 'Tuesdays with Morrie'.

'Fortunes Rocks' was popular too.

With Pavlova, Delia's recipe, 'cause its dead easy!

Gmac2009 · 08/06/2009 22:28

Under the Skin is brilliant and you certainly won't be short of things to discuss.

Would also suggest:

Borderliners by Peter Hoeg

The Courage Consort also by Michel Faber

Limestone and Clay by Lesley Glaister

The Cutting Room by Louise Welsh

... and meringues with cream are always an easy winner!

Cadelaide · 08/06/2009 23:24

I'm liking brownies.

But I really should be thinking about the book. It's between Cold earth and Under the Skin I think.

Don't think I've read any Michel Faber.

Or maybe ice-cream.

Hmmm.

I was just about to start the very same thread but I'll read yours instead !!!

I just read "The secret life of Bees" Sue Monk Kidd, enjoyed it and an easy read, loads to talk about. Also recently enjoyed "The Lost Daughter" Diane Chamberlain, very pacy, real page turner.

Jofo · 09/06/2009 16:17

The Other Hand - Chris Cleave is v good and relatively short. It's also titled Little Bee.

Am into dark chocolate cake with fresh strawberries at the moment. Yummy.

londonartemis · 10/06/2009 14:19

I've just read The Outcast by Sadie Jones which has loads to talk about.
I really got pulled into the book as it went along. Definitely recommend it.
